Supposed to do 2 piece tint for back coupe window?

I got my silver coupe tinted (high performance 15% tint all around) it looks great, but I noticed he did 2 pieces for the back window when I looked closely. I was upset so I called him back and asked him about it and he said the best way to do it for the g35 coupe back window is in 2 pieces since there is such a steep slope to it. He said there is a better way of it starting to peel or bubble or something like that by doing it in one piece. Personally I think his story is bullshit even though he said he had been doing this half his life. I think it would just be harder to do the other way. It doesnt look horrible(probably wouldn't be able to notice unless you look closely) but I am very picky about details., but if you look closely you can see the seem where it is slplit in about the middle of the window So help me out guys how many of you have actually had their windows done with 2 pieces in the back. Is there any truth at all to what he is saying?

Re: Supposed to do 2 piece tint for back coupe win

Never had it down as 2 pieces before, so I can't comment on it's longevity. It can be done as a one piece, it's just more time consuming. What they do is lay the tint sheet out on the outside of the window and heat it up with a hairdryer to get the form of the window and then cut it to form. Then mount it to the inside of the wiindow. Less cuts means less chance of a gap with heat and shrinkage. But if you have had it for awhile and it's been exposed to some heat you should be fine.

Mine was done as one piece as well, but I have had cars done in two, and even three pieces before. They put the "splice" at one of the defroster lines to hide it.

I never had a problem with the multi-piece applications.

If it is noticeable enough to bug you, then he didn't do good enough of a job... but if you are just being too picky and it's a matter of G35 driver's pursuit of perfection, might not be worth it to make a big issue out of it. Before you take it back and make him get it just right, really try to consider how much work will have to be done for how much of an improvement...? 2 piece is normal on some windows with belled or really steep curved surfaces... I personally don't think the G35C's back window falls into this category.

I think that it will bother you if you don't get it done in one piece. I say take it to another shop that can do it in one.

If you take it back, make sure he puts lots of adhesive on those freaking dots on the back window so the tint will properly seal over the dots.

Re: Supposed to do 2 piece tint for back coupe window?

Another thing I noticed was that on the side edge of the front window(flat part) there is a little space that is not tinted maybe a quarer inch that is more noticable. Is this done because the window makes contact with the rubber in this spot more than say the top of the window where there is also a small space normally left(the space on the side is a little more noticable than on top). I am just unsure of whether he could have gone closer on the side, the tops are fine since it is barely noticable and I know they cannot completely tint up to the top of the window, but the side I don't know...Let me know what your front windows look like so I know, thanks for the help.

Mines a one-piece. Sounds like laziness to me.

I used to do tint and that is something I have never heard before....It would definetly be easier to install in two pieces...I call bullshit on his excuse. Take it back and let him have it, that would be unacceptable to me.

Re: Supposed to do 2 piece tint for back coupe window?

As far as the side window go there is always a space left all the way around. As long as it is not noticable when the door is closed, than that should be fine. They leave that there to prevent peeling from the edges. Our test was to close the door and if you could not see a place where the window wasnt tinted then that was close enough to the edge. You shouldnt want it close to the edge at all. The perfect window would be close enough that you cannot see an untinted portion when the door closed and as far away from the edge as possible. Especially since that is where people touch the window.(Not that you should let anyone touch your car ever) But that is the highest traffic area.
So I am pretty sure yours if fine. Unless you have a spot where there is no tint when the door is closed. In that case take it back!!!

your tint guy is a lazy ***.....tell him to do it right or punch him and get your money back....
any given window should never have more than one contigous piece of film on it. shortcuts dont cut it on the G..

Of course, once it's on, there's a risk of ruining the defroster if you remove the tint. Even if they don't scrape it, but use some soaking solution to loosen and remove it, it can still damage the defroster.
