Hi,

I have a 03 G35 coupe (non Brembo brake). Recently, I noticed grinding noise when I apply the brake and the car is running at low speed. I do not experience any vibration under braking. I can also hear noise when I release the brake pedal, and the brake is little sticky. I checked the brake pads and they still have a lot of life left. I took it to the Infiniti dealer and they said it was my rear rotors. They are warped. They charge $250 + tax to resurface the two rear rotors (re-use the old brake pads). My question is that should I go with this option? Or should I purchase a set of brand new OEM rotors (not sure if I need new brake pads or not) and install them myself. I do have some experiences working on car stuff myself. Thank you for any suggestions.

 

No one has any suggestions? I think I decide to do the brake work myself. I looked online last night, and found a deal for the set of 2 rear rotors (I believe Centric Rotors) and brake pads (OEM pads) @ Everythingg35 for $129.53. Is this a good set for a good deal out there? Thanks,

Don't pay the 250$+ to have the dealer do it, you're wasting your money.

Find a good set of rotors and pads online ( as you have already ) and just throw them on yourself. Brakes are one of the easiest things you can repair on your own, and you'll save a ton.

 

Also depends on what you're looking for, do you just want OEM or similar pads and rotors? If so you can go to NAPA and get a set of rotors for 60$ and pads for 25$, if you're looking for something a little more high end search around for some good slotted rotors, which would still be cheaper then have your old crap rotors re-surfaced. Hawk makes some really good pads for around 80$.

 

Thanks for your replies, Ellis. I probably just want to have an OEM brake set. Because I just want to fix my rear brake problem, and not going to do the whole brake system replacement.

 

........It's really not a great idea to take your G35 to the stealership for anything other than warranty work, if you still have one! You could order the parts from our Infiniti sponsor, they sell us parts at wholesale. Might take 2 or 3 days to receive parts depending on where you live....Rick in parts 800-919-8130. G/L

Just FYI I used to have this problem when I first got my G. Had the front OEM rotors machined\resurfaced and the pads replaced and the problem went away. It was super noticeable before I got it fixed though, especially braking while hitting a stop sign at the bottom of a steep hill. I had my work done at a local shop, not the dealer. I think it was less than 100 bucks.

Wow 250+ to resurface rotors, that is too much. Some places will charge 80 bucks or so just to resurface per axle. There are also some shops that would do a standard brake service for under 200 , that consist of new pads and resurfacing rotors. If you have room to turn your rotors, there is absolutely no need to replace them, unless you are trying to upgrade to a BBK. As far as your brake pads, it depends on the life. Get a second opinion at another shop instead of the dealership, and if you do get it done make sure they are quality parts. Good luck!!!

 

These are very good points. I can't believe I used to waste money getting the brakes changed. I now do anything I can myself. I'm going to be changing the diff fluid, spark plugs, drive belts, and I will fix the axle click. Purchasing tools is the startup cost, but the tools will cost less than what any shop will charge for just labor. Also tools are a 1 time cost.

 

I took the car to the dealership for some other services (cracked headlight reflector, gas tank sensor, and recall issue) as well and not just for the brake issue. I still have Elite Extended Warranty on the vehicle until next year. However, the warranty does not cover for brake rotors and pads. I think I will look around for a set of rear Centric rotors and Hawk pads. Any idea what is the best deal for this set and where to get it.

 

Have you tried our MARKETPLACE under vendor brakes? I know HAWK HP pads are sold at a reasonable price, not sure about the Centric rotors....DBAs are a better choice but may cost a little more. Every once in a while it's better to spend a little more now so it doesn't come back and bite you in the azz later....

That's incredibly cheap. IMO I wouldn't trust my brakes and waste my own labor by using any parts that weren't from recognized mfg's. Do yourself a favor and buy brand name parts like others are recommending. You don't need to go high end but this ebay ad looks rock bottom. You should be able to get decent OEM level parts (rotors and pads) for all 4 wheels for about $350-400.

How many miles are on the rotors and pads? Under normal driving conditions (not tracking) OEM rotors should be good for at least 60,000 miles or 2 brake pad changes... I wouldn't replace the rotors unless you're sure they are warped, are in excess of this mileage, or the cooling fins are completely corroded. More often than not people think their rotors are warped when in fact the pads have worn unevenly due to dirt or other factors affecting their movement in the caliper. Just like painting or even detailing, 90% of the results come from good preparation (surface cleaning) and experience in applying the material.

If your rotors are warped, you have to replace them, not resurface them.

Warping is different than worn rotors. Machining them isn't going to fix warping... it only cleans up the surface so it's not uneven and so it has a cross-hatched pattern(assuming they use a brake lathe on it and not just a regular lathe).
