Re: 20 more hp or 10 more lb/ft torque?

Damn I've never gotten so many posts in one day. Well since everyone is getting so technical let me say why I would rather have my 10 more lb/ft than the 20hp. It seems that a lot of you are speaking in terms of if you were to drag race the car. Everyday driving I would think you would use more torque than of your HP. I guess I should say im not at all into drag racing either, I like rally races. I like punching the gas out of turns. I'm not so technically educated on the subject as most of you, but i rarely use my max hp up at 6200 rpms.

Consider that the 270 lb-ft of torque everyone speaks of occurs at 4800 RPM. It's not exactly cruising RPM. And we still do not know what the rst of the torque curve looks like on the new VQ.

...well after a short break, this thread erupted!

I would still rather have an increase of 10lb-ft of tourqe at 1500 rpm's. Of course my implication was that the area under the torque curve would increase throughout the rpm range, thus equating to being able to utilize the torque where I normally drive.

How many of you have seen the dyno chart for the JWT Pop Charger which claim of 6.5hp at redline. There is no gain up until over 5000 rpm's. How long do you stay in gear from 5000 rpm's to 6400 rpm's? Less than 1 second? Forget whether the claim is valid just consider what this equates to... Not much!

Again, I'd take the torque and as early as possible please.

What? You think that John Kerry is not consistent?

Re: 20 more hp or 10 more lb/ft torque?

A car's acceleration is proportional to its horsepower-to-weight ratio. Thus torque ALONE does NOT tell you how well a car will accelerate.

For example, I own both a G35C and an S2K. These cars have very similar acceleration specs -- but the G35C has vastly more torque. However, the S2K compensates for a lack of torque by operating at much higher RPMs. The S2K can be loud and unpleasant to drive at such high RPMs. Keeping up with the G may mean downshifting all the time and burning up a clutch. But the fact remains that the S2K has slightly better acceleration despite having inferior torque

True to some extent but keep in mind that the S2K achieves it's superior numbers only by eliminating a huge portion of the powerband in which it's Torque is unable to compensate for the particular weight of the car (i.e. 0 to 6000 RPM). Throw that portion of the powerband into the equation and the torque has more bearing on acceration. Drive both cars from 1500/22000 RPM up through redline and the difference in acceration is tremendous.
