Re: SUBSTITUTION FOR NAVI
1) will cost you $1500-2000
2) will cost you $500
3) will cost you $3500
Its up to you!
I would wait for http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600 and see what kind of reviews it gets, you can pick one up for $450 from tvnav.com by calling them (pre-order)

Re: SUBSTITUTION FOR NAVI
I have a Garmin GPS 3+ hooked up to my laptop, using DeLorme's mapping software. It's very cool and works great. The only negative is that you have to haul your laptop on the trip with you and stick it in the seat next to you. Not very good if you have a passenger with you.
You might also want to check out the Garmin Streetpilot series of units. They don't hold a whole lot of data (nothing like the massive DVD nav units), but they get the job done and sure are handy. Plus, you can take them with you from car to car as they are portable units.

Re: SUBSTITUTION FOR NAVI
I use my Garmin GPS III+ with their cd mapping software downloaded to the unit for really good detail. The unit sits perfectly where the navi would normally go on top of the console with the cover open. I can view the display with no problem and have all the benefits of gps navigation.
