Angry Grinding gear

I just bought a 2003 G35 coupe yesterday. The car was shifting fine and now it grinds going into 5th gear today...I looked this up online and saw that a lot of people have this problem. There isn't any warranty and the car has 69,300 miles and would have been past the 6 years anyhow. I saw a recommendation to replace it with a later model transmission, and also saw that some people either replaced their clutch or synchro. Does anyone have an idea of how this would cost and which route is best? I can't take it back as far as I know, I bought it outright at a dealer which had it traded in, not an Infiniti dealer. I'm in San Diego,CA.

not to sound like an a s s but are you sure it's not just driver error ?? when I first bought my 06, it took a little while to get used to the way it shifted and it not only felt notchy but would grind at times .. I'm thinking that since you JUST got the car that it might be a learning curve .. also, if you do find it to be a non-mechanical issue, I'd recommend getting a new shift **** .. I've found that the stock know isn't too great and you might benefit from a heavier **** of the same or different design type .. I recently just put a G37 shift **** into my car and it helps ..

My 2004 was out of warranty totally, but Infiniti still took the bill for replacing tranny with newer one, clutch and flywheel. I got a sticker too got all that stuff and payed $29

Try the dealer, Infiniti knows there are issues with the earlier trans and may take it.

Do you think this would be applicable as I'm not the original owner?

I'm pretty sure it's not user error, although I've read they're harder to learn. My boyfriend and I both noticed it and it only happens in the 5th gear, and aren't just learning to drive with a clutch.

try making sure you are fully engaging the clutch while shifting. then make sure your fluid is clean and up to full level.

I called the dealer I purchased the car from and they said to bring it in on Monday and they'd take a look at it...but I'm going to try and not get my hopes up they'll do anything about it. I just bought it 24 hours ago.
Thank you for telling me about yours, I'll try taking it in to Infiniti as well.

Good luck with this. In my case it was a year and a few months after i bought, but I did get an aftermarket full coverage warranty, so if Infiniti didn't take the bill, that would have so it didn't make a diff to me...lol

Im like you, 156k- had this problem for a good year now. It is the synchros in the transmission. Happens usually going into 3rd and 5th. I haven't tried the dealer but it should be covered by them b/c apparently its happening to many people with the old trannys. Any suggestions on what I should tell the dealer when I bring it in???

The place says that it was the clutch thinning. From what I have read here everyone who was able to pushed to get a new transmission while it was under warranty. They offered to either replace the clutch or refund the car. I didn't want to end up with the car having the same problem like others have talked about. I'll have better luck next time. At least I'm sure this car is the type I want now after having it for 2 days. I'm lucky I didn't get stuck with it because they didn't have to do anything for me.

well for some reason ,, idk if its just me but i think the car might have additional problems

you said it was repainted ..

make sure the car didnt have any other structal damage

idk, that just my opinion ,

you should have a mechanic check out the front end damage or under

idk,,, but hopefuly everything works out

ive been reading along with you on your threads,

i think someone is trying to sell you a lemon
