My good buddie DED has told me (if I'm smart enough to remember correctly) that higher octane will only keep our cars from knocking. If you are not experiencing knock, then on a NA vehicle, don't waste your money.
Instead of beating a dead horse, check out the links below. I simply used the search function and…
Octane 1
Octane 2
High Octane fuel is a waist of money
...this is what I found.
John Kerry promises a $1000 middle class tax cut AFTER the Bush tax cut expires.
The Bush tax cut is ~$3500 per middle class family.
JOHN KERRY = MIDDLE CLASS TAX INCREASE!

91 is what the manf. calls for. running a higher octane will not help performance - period. All these people that run premium gas in their toyota camrys and such are wasting money. There is NO benefit.

Re: What octane are you guys putting to your G?
I use 91, because that's all that's available in CA....and it's probably 30c more than the rest of the country is paying. Damn legislators.
As for the talk about high octane is 'only to prvent our engines from knocking', that is not true. Japan and Europe uses higher octane gas and so their higher end cars tend to be designed for that. The higher-octane gas ignites at a higher temp, and therefore the engine is designed to operate w/ this in mind.
now putting high-octane in a car that only requires regular is a waste of money, and potentially harmful to your engine life if you do it for a long time.

Re: What octane are you guys putting to your G?
With my pickup, at time of the year, I need to go to 91 octane to keep from pinging when accererating on the highway.
With my G35 Sedan, I haven't really noticed a difference between 87 and 91.

what year pickup? is the engine stock?
sounds like maybe your timing is not set correctly if it is a stock engine. There is also the possibility of a weak fuel pump. Higher octane may take care of the pinging, but your just covering up a problem, not solving the real issue.
Anyway, on a new computer controlled vehicle, if you run a higher octane than required, you are actually causing the engine to run less effeciently because it cannot burn all the raw fuel. This will actually decrease the life of the engine.
I'm not saying don't run 93 in the G. I'm saying don't think if your going to race it will help to fill it up with 108 or 110. On the other hand you need to run 91 for the engine to operate correctly. Sure you can run 87, and the engine management system will retard the timing to prevent detonation and it will run ok. You'll probably have less power and it is not ideal for the long term, but basically any fuel that's available will make your engine run.
I will put premium in mine - around here that's 91 or 92
