I bought my first car that was a stick (not the G) when I was 16 and had never really driven before. I learned on that car when I barely knew how to drive an automatic....you will be fine.

Sounds like your on the right track! Practice makes perfect! I remember spending 3 hours in a walmart parking lot working through the gears, especially 1st, until I got it down.

As to what JBF was saying... I was taught to drive stick on my G coupe ~two years ago, clutch is still working like a champ! (just hit 70k miles on oem clutch)

Stuff I learned:

1) I push in the clutch way to far. Our sweet spot is high. No need to slam it to the floor.
2) I was not giving it enough gas at first and I was to much on the clutch. Don't be afraid to use your gas pedal to get her moving.
3) Don't ride the clutch when sitting still.
4) To hell with everyone behind you and how long it takes you to get off the line.
5) Do not bother down shifting if you do not know how to rev-match.
6) 2nd gear is fine if your wheels are moving slowly and need to get going again.
7) 5th is fine down to about ~40mph, maybe a bit slower. Don't feel the need to drop a gear as soon as you start to slow. 3rd can go down to damn near a complete stop. Don't lug your engine though. This is just for slowing down.
8) Relax. Being uptight makes shifting harder than it is.
9) Feel confident you learned how to drive a "Real" car (please don't flame me! )

Practice makes perfect. My first car was also a stick and was bought brand new. Everyone learns one way or another. #4 above is great advice!

I would have learned on someone elses car, burned their clutch up and then buy a manual car.

This just doesn't make any sense to me.
Not everybody is in the position to learn on a manual beforehand. Find me a place that rents a stick. Or if your friends aren't into cars, 99% of the time they will be driving automatic. And if your friends ARE gearheads, most of them won't really be that enthused to let you fully flesh out how to drive stick at their cars expense, so that leaves you with cursory experience driving stick at most before getting into your own manual car.

Because it's a common over exaggeration and may needlessly freak him out. There's some thing stick drivers say that are hilarious, one of which is the glass clutch. Another one is never using your brake, ever, because your brakes are only good for 5 stops before they need to be replaced or overheat. Just saying.

But for the sake of getting over it, that's all I'll say.

Lmao guys hes don't going to destroy his clutch in an afternoon of learning.

The idiots who race every piece of crap on the road are doing more damage than him.

... My dad threw me the keys my G35 to drive home (then his) a week after I got my learners permit when I was fifteen. It took me a week and a half to learn how to drive it.

It's not a big deal, practice makes perfect. Just stay calm and don't fear the car. - something hard to do when you barely know how to drive. :P

I learned when i bought my 6MT. never drove a manual car before and i was scared that i wasnt gonna be able to learn. But buying a manual car was the best decision i ever made. took me 2 weeks to get it perfect. U'll get it in time man all it takes is alot of driving and getting the feel of the clutch and how the car responds. Have fun!

I'm with Johnny

Find a family member, friend whatever make a kijiji ad asking for someone to show you, don't **** yourself by burning out an expensive clutch.

learn on a honda.

Dumb move

Also, a "smooth" transition on a VQ35DE is almost impossible. The tranny on these motors aren't the smoothest. It's one of the notchiest clutch out there.

You have to try really hard to shift smoothly on this car.
