The VQ uses shims to adjust valve clearance....so you have to take your measurements first to see what shims you need to order.

Your looking at buying or exchange lifter buckets, as the VQ35DE doesn't have shims, its also a PITA of a job, most people pull the engine to remove/change cams, as the complete front of the engine needs to come off, as well as the cams, but you can check your clearance's but removing plenum and cam covers, usually valve clearance decreases with wear, as the valve seat get hammered so shouldn't be more noisy,
They are designed to be OK for at least 100,000mls and checked when the timing chain is replaced.

the buckets come all in diff sizes as far as thickness. check valve lash at each and order whichever ones need to be a lil tighter. gotta take the valve covers off to check it, and if you gotta change some out.....the timing chain and cams gotta come out.

I know this is late, but its good information to have.

The clearance on the exhaust lifters is 0.011-0.015 and the intake is 0.011-0.013

I usually try to stay 0.013 for exhaust and 0.012 for intake, if possible.

Ticking noise & running rich!

pturner,

Once again I would like to say thank you all for posting your issues with Our cars. It has been a good help now with that been said. I have a 03 G35 with 94k sedan 6pmt that has a ticking noise on the top of the engine and running rich. It a smell that come in the car after I had my valve cover gaskets change sometime when driving. I took it to Nissan they say its my Valve lifter buckets need to be change and that it will be a pretty penny to fix. That I should get a new engine or buy a new car. Now from my understanding can I get someone to adjust the buckets since this particular engine does'nt have shims. Someone help me don't know what to do?
