03 6mt Coupe with Transmission Problems
Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this site, came over from my350z.com. I know the issue has been beaten to death, and I've just about exhausted the search tool without finding a definitive answer. I just bought a used 03 g35 or v35 as we call them in Australia. The car has about 25k miles on it and everything is great except for the Transmission.
I first noticed the problem when going through a drive through and feathering the clutch in 1st gear. It sounded like there was a rotating steel can with nails bouncing around where the transmission was supposed to be. I tried giving it more revs and the grinding/rattling noise just got louder.
The same thing also happens in reverse and in 2nd gear at low rpms. After searching through threads here and on 6mt.com, There were mixed conclusions. Some have said it is normal, and some have said it was the clutch, Flywheel, Throw out bearing and every combination of the three.
I figured if i'd post with my unique symptoms it would generate a more accurate answer. I took the car back to the Dealership and they said they would "look at it".
Can anyone give me some suggestions to pass onto them to ensure that the problem is fixed correctly.
Thanks in Advance guys!

Thanks for the input guys. As far as the car having an aftermarket clutch or flywheel, I have no idea. It was imported from Japan, as they aren't mass produced here. When the dealership calls, I'll be sure to ask.
I'll try to get them to cover the cost of a new transmission, it's not going to be easy though lol. It's a small dealership that specializes in imports and they have their own warranty plan
Where's the best place to buy a cd009 from? Any idea how much it would cost to ship it from the U.S. to Australia?

i wouldn't advise that you buy the transmission from the U.S it will cost almost as much as the tranny to ship it there.. You should check out the japan market
Btw 03-05 G35 & 350Z are the same so if you find a 350Z 6speed cd009 pick it up it works thats what i have on mine
D.G 03 O.G Coupe 6MT/Brembo's/Nismo Bumper/Nismo Intake/Custom System Nav/TV/DVD/Rear view camera oh yeah & 05 350Z CD009 Transmission

Ok guys, I an update! The dealer called today saying the problem was fixed. I Went to pick up the car and low and behold..the chatter and shudder are still extremely there. I blew up at the dealer, they had my car for 5 days and did nothing. I asked what exactly they'd been doing with it. He told me he ran a complete diagnostic, and he checked the whole tranny. When I asked if the tranny was even removed, to check the clutch, flywheel and bearings he said " why would I do that?"
Was I wrong to expect that the tranny would be taken off the car to do a full diagnostic? He told me the chatter was due to a "heavy duty clutch and dual mass flywheel". I wasn't buying the fact that the car had the stock flywheel and was still making this much noise at low rpms. He took me to the performance shop that did the trans. check and the owner pretty much told me the same thing, the only thing they did was put my car on the dyno and max it out to check for slippage, which apparently it didn't.
He also completely ruled out a new cd009 trans because he thinks there's absolutely nothing wrong with the car. Ugh..i'm on the ropes and I guess I have to bite the bullet and fork out the money for the tranny myself. Sucks to spend 23k on a car only to have it sound like cement mixer ever time it takes off from a stop.

to rule out clutch chatter try going into first gear have the clutch pedal depressed and rev your engine to 1500 rpms engage the clutch slowly (release pedal) if you hear the clanging its clutch chatter. A dealership/repair shop wouldn't take apart your tranny and check out your clutch because it would take way to long and they would lose money doing it. Before you fork out any money for a tranny i sugest taking it to a tranny shop and getting them to diagnose it. Don't take it to the dealerships tranny shop.

It wouldn't hurt to drop the transmission fluid and check it's condition - any metal shavings would suggest problems inside the transmission.
I've got an 03 350GT Coupe as well, trans has the usual 1st-2nd gear grind that most people have on here. These cars come from Japan with a lot of undocumented mods so it would be good to find out it's history.
