Debadged.. Engraved outlines?!

Hey guys,

A few days ago I decided I wanted to remove the "INFINITI" badges from the trunk. I found what appeared to be the outline of the letter engraved into the paint. At first I thought it was extreme buildup of sorts, but after trying to clean it off for 30 minutes and a closer look I am almost certain these are scratches that are engraved far past the clear and paint coats. When I debadged the "G35" badge there was no such issue. I used some 3M double sided tape and reapplied the letters. Here are some pics.

Has this happened to anyone before? Ideas? I really would like to remove the INFINITI but looks like that's out of the question now

-Sean

Hmmm, when I took mine off there was a slight residue left on the car but it wasn't scratched. It took me a good month for it to eventually go after washing it several times.

I finally got rid of all the reflections and spots once I got the car detailed, maybe you should try detailing the car or taking it to someone who knows how to remove these types of stains.

I hope it's a stain and not engraved

Try to polish, buff, and wax it.

When I took my letters off the rear, there was residue left over. I eventually got it off by heating with a hairdryer and a TON of goo gone. You pictures look like someone has scratched the letters into the paint, is that correct?

I have seen that when the trunk gets repainted and they only tapped up the letters and did not remove them.

plastidip

i bet somebody had them plastidipped before you had the car.

exacto knife used to cut out the plastidip letters would leave an etch in the paint just like what you have there.

Sorry for the trouble man, why not just leave it on, it doesnt look hideous and itll save you the headache.

i really dont think that it has been plastidiped… just think for a second, how many g owners really know what plastidip is? (forget about g35driver)
And how many g gowners are cheap enough to even consider plastidip??? just my opinion

Unless someone used glue to put those letters on (we've seen that) really saturating the area with WD40 or GooGone and using your fingernail will remove the adhesive. When you're done you may need to have the trunk lid buffed out with a high speed buffer/cleaner to remove scratches/shadows followed with a coat or two of quality wax. Debadged trunks look so cool....

Thanks for the replies everyone. After about 30 minutes of working with a hairdrier, goo gone, and wd40 these 'scratches' didn't change one bit. Also my fingernail would catch them, similar to other scratches I've delt with before, but then again couldn't a large about of buildup? Hell I even tried to carefully pick at it with a fine pointed tool. Once I saw that even that wouldnt remove it, I figured it had to be a scratch. Once I buy a PC, I'll try again and hit it with some polish but for now idk. I have no idea how they could have gotten there.

Edit: Oh and one more thing. The picture makes the marks look grey, as if it were residue from the adhesive. It wasn't at all. It was silver
