Drag Results

Derek, myself and Wayne headed up the US41 dragway in Morocco, Indiana this past Sunday. Overall, I had a great time and ran many, many times. The weather topped out at 55 degrees and the track is at 660 ft. Anyway, getting traction on the 275 Toyos was a huge problem for me. I got excessive wheel hop, which is not a characteristic of the Coupe. I spun violently thru first and second gears. I did some really good burnouts, but I just couldn't get the Toyos to warm up. The Toyos are excellent SUMMER tires, but in 50 degree weather they didn't do too well. In 70 degree weather, I sometimes bog (which means too much traction) when I do low rpm launches. My best time was 14.4 at 97 mph with at 60' of 2.3. On the other hand, Derek was pulling 14.2s with a best ET of 100 MPH! He was on 17" stock all seasons. Hmmm, that goes to show you that wider isn't better at the track and tires are very important. In retrospect, I should've played with my tire pressure, used my winter M3s, or slipped the clutch versus dumping, but that probably wasn't a good idea considering how many runs I did. On a side note, I still beat a E36 M3 5sp and old style TL-S auto with I/H/E. They were pulling 14.5s.

Re: Drag Results

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. This was my first time ever going to a drag strip.

Re: Drag Results

Times weren't too bad at all! Your MPH is a pretty damn good indicator you were spinnin just a lil!!! LOL Launching the 6MT is pretty tough, always gotta change it depending on conditions. From what I've read, peeps get the best times by feathering the clutch a bit. This should avoid wheel spin and hop! As far as the coupes not having wheel hop, I dunno, I have had it pretty bad as well as others! You should be running pretty good when the spring weather rolls in and hits above 60!!!

Re: Drag Results

Doing a burnout on street compound tires is a mistake - one that a lot of people make. Only slicks and drag radials have the correct chemical makeup so that they get stickier as they get hotter. Heating up your Toyos prob. made your traction problem worse. First time huh? You'll be back - it's addicting.

Re: Drag Results

Thanks for the words of encouragement/advice. You're right! It is addicting and I'm planning my next trip. I'll try feathering versus dumping and practice on the street in the meantime. I have to remember that the clutch isn't on/off, but can be modulated like the brakes and throttle. Most importantly, I have to remember all this when I get up to the line. Also, the 60' is more important than the RT. I swear everything went out the door when the adrenalin (sp) was factored in.

Re: Drag Results

yeah, especially when its your first time. You're worried about staging into the lights and not looking like an idiot and what not. Glad you had a blast. Try running higher pressure in the front - like 40psi - and then experiment with the rear pressure - LOW. I have not played with my Pilots yet, but I'm guessing you want to start around 25psi and then after you make a run and they build some heat and pressure drop them back down to 25 again. Then play around with like 22psi or so and see what the tires like. And I would def. not do burnouts. As you find out the right pressure for max. traction, you should be able to increase the RPM point for your launch. Good luck.

Re: Drag Results

I disagree w/ that stament because doing a burnout warms up the tires especially summer tires. Of course you might mean don't roll into the water and light them up but a small burnout does help.

Re: Drag Results

I blew out a tire on one of my 19inch BBS RGR's two weeks earlier. So I was running w/ my stock 17's which weigh about the same as my forged 19's.
I have an 03 G35 5AT Coupe w/ Z-tube + K&N, Y-pipe, Brembos from a 350z.

19's(w/ Pilots sports)..............17's stock

Temp= 70.................Temp= 50

60'... 2.221...........2.179
330... 6.206...........6.060
1/8... 9.432...........9.225
MPH... 75.98...........77.85
1000... 12.232..........11.944
1/4... 14.581..........14.215
MPH... 95.97...........100.26

These were done about 2 months apart, this is not a controlled experiment. Take it for what its worth I do know I would be able to pull off a 14.4 w/ the 19inch wheel as I have gotten much better at launching the car (Yes I know its an auto).

And Yes I knew the 19's would slow me down when I got them.

Re: Drag Results

Sorry I missed you guys... I was tied up all day.

I've been to US 41 a couple of times and I've found track prep to be decent. Nice thing is there is never anyone there... So you can burn your clutch all you want!!!

Re: Drag Results

do some research on tire componds and see what you come up with. I agree that a cold tire will not perform at optimum levels, but if you do a burn out with a street compound tire and get the temp up above its intended operating range they become what some racers call "greasy". I will admit that I don't know what the temp range is on the pilots, but experience tells me if your sipinnin' 'em to the point of smokin' 'em, you're probably exceeding the temp range. This is all of course just my 2 cents worth, but if we both went to the track I would put $ on me beating you if you insist on doing burnouts. But maybe you'd take my $ Everyone has an opinion, I never claim to be 100% right in the info I put in my posts.

Re: Drag Results

Just out of curiosity, how much does a vehicle lose from going to 19" rims.

Re: Drag Results

I concur with omahaG regarding street tires. By performing excessive burnouts the tires become greasy and can hurt your times. Best bet is to avoid the water and just spin your tires enough to get any debris off. A very important factor for traction is getting the car in the "groove". Look for the dark patch areas when staging, this is where rubber has mated to the asphalt. My experience when racing on street tires(stick car) is to slip the clutch. This requires practice and your rpms will vary depending on traction available.

Good Luck!

Re: Drag Results

13.96 with a stock car.
Let me guess, BobbyD didn't do a burnout...
and ran low pressure in the back tires.

I like being right - it makes me smile.

Thanks for the support and the hard numbers from a G to back it up. I haven't had mine to the strip, so all my input has been based on experience with other vehicles. i know it applies to most vehicles and I knew it applied to the G, but getting some of these guys to believe is a different story.

Re: Drag Results

It was awesome to see Deang35c6 and Derek173 at the track. These guys were a little quiet at first, but as the day wore on, they were out there hot-lapping the strip to get more passes……..

An awesome day was had by all. We all set personal bests, with mine being 14.50 @ 95.77 mph. I managed to squeeze my 60 foots down to 2.11’s, also a new personal best.

Derek trapped in excess of 100 mph…….insane with as few mods as he has.

I think DeanG35c6 cut the best 60-foot with a 2.09….please correct if wrong.

The best races for me were the two wins against a 5-speed Mustang 5.0, and the race against DeanG35c6. He actually ran a faster time with a 14.518 to my 14.523, but I crossed the line a scant .173 seconds ahead of him by virtue of a .502 light. My R/T’s for the day were :.540, .577, .567, .502, and a .472 redlight on the last run.

Pics to follow, and I have a few MPEGs if anyone wants to host them. (including the 2 wins against the 5.0)

Awesome day again, guys…great times by everyone…we will have to do it again.

Wayne.
