2004 6mt coupe OC issues.
okay so i've been very ignorant in checking my oil in between changes, and i just started realizing that the smoke during cold start up is probably OIL. :\... What are my options? If i get a new longblock... which engines are compatible, or would it be better/cheaper to rebuild? also what would i need for a rebuild? thanks
at this point i'm trying to just run the engine until i start topping off with oil every week. At this point it seems like it would run more than 1000 bucks to fix, so i'm going to start saving. i just want to know how much to save, and what i'm saving for. cheers!

Well....you kinda need to give more info on like miles and how you have been on oil changes. How many miles till you get an oil change and how bad is oil consumption. Any noise from the valve train or metal in the oil. Maybe send you oil to blackstone labs for an analysis and see what they say. I would used the motor till it blows and then replaced with a used motor for $1000-$1500 and $500 labor. That will be your best bet for cost efficiency unless you want to go in there and rebuild only what is damaged and get it up and running then you might get it done for $1000-$1200 if it is only head worked needed.
What type of oil do you run since that can cause oil consumption too if it is too thin. Castrol synthetic that is made in Germany 0w30 is really good oil and same with Mobil 1 Extended performance 5w30. I would run a K&N filter or mobile 1 and change your oil between 3000-4500 miles. The OC is not that bad in the 2004 year since it has the regular motor not revup.

80k miles on the car and well i'm burning about 3 quarts in between changes (3500 miles) on cold starts there's a great amount of white/blueish smoke that comes out of the exhaust for like 10 seconds.... and i use regular dino oil... i will try to switch to another oil that'll hopefully reduce the consumption.
10w 40 or 10w 50 help slowed my consumption. lost about 1 mpg though. Usually only burn 1 quart or alittle less after 4000 mile oil change with mobile 1. When I started using Valvoline, it ate that oil like nothing. Switched back to mobile 1. If my oil consumption gets worse, I'm going to just use conventional and not waste money on full synhetics anymore. Pennzoil 10w 40 will do the trick. 12 bucks for 5 quarts.
The crappy thing is, i don't notice any lack of power.
Best bet before you get a new engine or anything like that is to get a leak down test. That will pin point your problem whether it's your rings or other crap.
If it is your rings, get a rebuilt short block from like Z1 or import parts pro. 2600 and i think better than getting a newer engine or getting your engine rebuilt. The block has great internals.

i'm going to go ahead and try that penzoil you suggested thanks! and that leak down test you speak of... is it pricey?

It not unheard of for the first gen non revup motors have OC issues but it's not normal. Buying a short block from someone like Z1 and having your heads freshened isn't a bad idea. It'll cost you a couple grand regardless of what you do so prepare for it. You could do your next oil change with Mobil1 20W/50 but I seriously doubt you see much difference....couldn't hurt to try.

Leak down test shouldn't cost that much. probably around 150 bucks. But if it ends up being your rings, Ride it till the short block dies and get a short block form Z1 or import parts pro. Better than getting a rebuild with stock internals. Those guys will put in some good internals in there for ya.
