Tire Feathering Question, Please Look Before You Pass By Another So Called Thread

I have a 2005 Coupe all stock with 24,500 miles. Just bought a couple weeks ago. It had the loud front tire noise coming from 30mph to a stop noise. I assumed it was from feathering. I installed a new set of Continental DWS all season tires. No more noise. My questions to you guys are. Do all years have the alignment issues ? I thought the tsb was for 2003 and maybe 2004. I would have thought they would have corrected the problem. I want these to last as long as they can. Since I havent lowered the car and I am running 17 inch wheels. What is the average life expectancy of tires on these cars? Car will never be driven beyond normal driving. Have a nitrous injected mustang for that = ) I bought this car for the looks, not for thrashing on. What kind of tire mileage are you guys getting with your stock cars? I do love this car and want it to last a long time. Thanks ahead of time for any information you may be able to give me.

depends on tires bro, and yes it is just another thread, do your research. each tires is gonna last more/less depending on utog ratings. My falkens have so far 18k miles on them and still look great and they are 18s, so it really depends, likewise people with performance tires may get less out of them. and tire size plays a big difference

Safely? 15k miles is the average.

Some people drive til the metal warning strips shows up. And they go on here claiming their tires last for 25k.

I don't think there were any TSB issued for the feathering and cupping issues.

Nissan did issue one for the 350z.

Another problem with the car is the is the compression rod bushing. Premature wear on those can throw off the alignment.

There is a TSB issued for those. Early on, it was the compression rod and the bushing. Infiniti now revised it to just the bushing which was redesigned to last longer than 10k miles.

Feathering is causes by not being able to rotate your tires and some what your alignment. Since you purchased the DWS they are an asymmetrical tire so you can rotate them side to side if the wheels are staggered. That will help minimize the amount of the feathering the tires get. Feathering always happens on the following wheels (the NONE drive wheels) so on our car the fronts feather on FWD cars the rears feather.

Now would be an excellent time to learn felixsc300, knowledge is power! Try doing a SEARCH on subject tires, there's a lot of information here on DRIVER. Then just for fun go to www.tirerack.com and see all the different tires available for your G. I can tell you one thing up front UTOG is the wear factor numbers, you don't want tires with numbers lower than 250 or higher than 350. You don't want tires with rubber too soft or too hard, one for wear and the other for stopping ability.

I got my tires from discount tire co. and they came with a 50,000 warranty on my Continental DWS and there on 19 inch wheels(rare for 19 inch low profile tires) so you should get somewhere close to that if not better, i know i will or my next set of tires is on them

As far as i know, short tire life is part of ownership.

I would recommend trying a camber kit; I heard it will extend tire life but I don't have any written proof.

If you went with the stock staggered sizes which i believe are 225 50 17 and 235 50 17 you should have the warranty on them. Here is a link to their website saying they offer the warranty in staggered fitments, dont let them give you any ****!!

Since you have factory sizes there's no reason why you shouldn't get close to 30K miles out of those new quality tires. And the warranty should apply since you have OE wheels/tire sizes staggered or not....

I would think you'd get better mileage on the DWS tires than a soft summer only performance tire. My used 06 6MT came with a set of Kumho SPTs. They roared loadly especially under breaking when I bought the car but the tread looked okay. I put another 10k miles on them. Ran the tread off on the inner edge but no metal showing

Just put brand new Hankook Evos on it. Super quiet. But I don't expect it to last long. I've heard that messing with the alignment does little to help since you can only set the toe and the camber can cause feathering and inside edge wear too. These tires are directional so cannot be swapped side to side without dismounting/remounting. I will probably swap rims every 5-7k miles although I understand these 19s can be hard to mount and remounting multiple times can be hard on the bead.

It really is an idiotic problem to have. Wheel alignment has not been an engineering dilemma in say, 100 years. I understand that the stock settings are supposed to improve handling. First, I think that is probably BS. But even if it is true, when is this improvement significant enough to be worth ruining expensive performance tires? Most G35/G37 (and Z) drivers would never see/feel this benefit even in spirited street driving. Maybe at the track. And if the handling is improved that much, then give us a camber and toe adjustments that can be made at the track!

I really love my G35 6MT coupe but there are so many things about it that just mystify me.
