I checked the coolant tank and it's completly empty. My engine overheated today. How do I put new coolant in?

 

If I'm wrong, someone will correct me I'm sure but I'd just open the cap on the overflow tank and add coolant until it reaches the "full" mark.

 

Can I just put water in it?

 

Open the cap on the radiator and put the coolant in there. Get real coolant because the water is not going to for very long.

 

Why not put coolant in it? It's not that expensive...

 

You should put 50% demineralized water and 50% coolant. That will cover a wider range of ambient temperatures, which is important if you're in a more northern location. I would only put water in summer (and in an emergency) - if you're in New York and you only put water, this winter you're going to be in serious trouble with no coolant at all, since it'll freeze in the rad and engine block. (I'm answering this for all G owners and not just to the OP).

Really? You created a new thread? You couldn't ask in your original overheating thread? Or even read the owner's manual? Maybe even Google?

 

Buy coolant, fill the overflow tank to the full line cold then remove the radiator cap when your car's cold and fill to the top. After driving for a while keep checking/filling your overflow tank. If overheating continues visit your local Nissan dealership....not Infiniti!

Make sure you buy filtered water at the store when you combine it 50/50. Tap water will leave mineral deposits in the reservoir that can really mess things up in there.

 

now you might have air in your lines so you might have to bleed the cooling system there is a screw in the passanger side of the engine bay you pour coolant in and then run the car w/ the ac on high and then unscrew that bleeder screw until coolant pours out w/o any bubbles, otherwise you'll keep overheating

 

If you aren't mechanically inclined enough to put coolant in your car, it just might be best to take it to a trusted mechanic. You don't want to do something like put washer fluid in your overflow tank. Nothing wrong with it, that's why mechanics have a job, even though on a forum we tend to DIY a lot.

Also, the radiator fans have an extended warranty from Infiniti, so they might have gone bad causing coolant to boil over and why you're low now. Coolant doesn't just disappear, have your mechanic take a look at it.

In an emergency, yes you can just add water to the overflow tank and/or radiator cap (if it's COOL!!!), but follow up to have a 50/50 coolant mix filled.

Also, a lot of coolant is premixed these days. If it's already a 50/50 mix, don't add more water to it.
