Smile Fix for broken third brake light

Hi guys, I have a 2003 G35 Coupe and the forum has a been a great resource for me when I have had issues with my car. I think I've had about every known issue that these cars have with my car, but I've been able to keep it going for minimal cash outlay each time thanks to knowledgeable people willing to share what they've learned.

The latest issue I had was the third brake light not lighting up when I hit the brake pedal. It was discovered during a state inspection otherwise I wouldn't have ever known about it. I priced a replacement from Sewell parts online and I think they came in at about $160 which is a great price compared to the $300+ you'll pay at the retail parts counter. I have had many dealings with them and they've always been knowledgeable and provided me with great service, but in this cas I was looking for a cheaper fix and also didn't want to replace it with another one just like it that will probably quit again one day.

I searched on Amazon for some replacement LED's and settled on some EdisonBright brand LED's that came on a 5 Meter roll for $19.99. The seller was a company called Loftek. The part number I bought was EDBR1210FX3012R. It is cuttable every 3 LED's so you can cut the proper length for your application. The housing on my car was about 16mm wide and 5 1/2" long with the led strip being about 8mm wide so you could double it up if you wanted, but I only used one strip. I think I cut 9 LED's worth of length which was about 1/2" too long for the housing, but I just peeled the backing off and stuck the lights in the housing with a little bit of curve to them so it would fit into the housing. The LED's I bought were ready to be wired up with 12 volts and they had a positive and a negative wired up on one end already so all I had to do was cut the electrical connector off my old OEM light and solder the wires to the new wires on the replacement LED's and it was ready to plug in. It works great and the brightness matches what was originally there almost exactly. While I can't speak to the long term reliability since I only fixed it a week ago, it is working great right now and I fixed it for $20 instead of $200 and I have 15 feet of LED to use if I need it for anything else.
