Sport OEM 19s factory painted or powdercoated?

My rear oem 19s have been badly scartched and needs a repaint...

I visited a local wheel shop and they quoted me $80-$90 to repaint each rim with a 95% match to factory.

Obviously, powercoating will yield better quality but will also cost more, and I do not want to spend too much given that a set of Sport OEM run around $600-$800 nowadays.

The shop owner did a quick inspection and said that the rims are painted and NOT powdercoated out of factory.

Is this true? Has anyone repainted their rims other than powdercoating with good experience?

I know you are in Cali so prices are probably higher, but her in KC can get powdercoating done for less than what they are going to charge to painting them A LOT cheaper. Dont paint them and not have them match 100% you wont be happy unless you do all 4.

I'm having mine powdercoated in black chrome as we speak. My car should be ready tomorrow. Based on my research here, nothing compares to that. The wheels should be 100% refurbished as well as finished in a black chrome. Shoukd be more than good enough for me. I can post pics for you tomorrow when I get the car back.

You could DIY with a couple rattle cans and about 4 hours of your time. But they will fade and chip even using the best paint available....been there! Powder coating is the way to do the job right! Have you seen what black chrome powder coating looks like? And you can even include another color with the black chrome like blue or red for a very custom look! It's (****)

Powder coating all the way! The finish will be very durable and you have plenty of color options.

Would it be best to have rims powercoated when you need a new set of tires?

True black chrome is actually black nickel which is plated on. Its EXTREMELY durable but hard to find. The powder coat version looks very nice as well. I use black nickel on my custom drums that I make

I would pay a little extra and have the powder coating done. Paint isn't going to last very long if you drive a lot. I found this guy real quick on craigslist who charges 70-100 per wheel. A professional shop isn't going to charge much more than that if you're worried about this guy's quality.

Lets see those rims, show the OP why it's worth the extra $$

Realistically, how long will a set of painted 19 Forged Rays last, before becoming chipped up / nasty. This would be just normal daily driving. 2 years maybe?

I had my motorcycle rims powder coated and loved them. Not one chip off the paint, shop damaged the wheel a bit mounting the tire's and the paint still was intact.

huh?.... you HAVE to do more research and search around.. I got all 4 of my wheels powdercoated for $260 or so.. if you lived down in SoCal then there are a ton of places that I would recommend that offer cheap prices and good quality powdercoating. If you're looking for a color that's very close to factory, but a tad bit brighter and more reflective.. i'd recommend bengal silver. You can't go wrong with that. I had my Varrstoen 2.2.1s powdercoated bengal silver and they look great on my car.

Only certain places will include mount and balance though. Of course you'll be getting charged more for that compared to just bringing in the rims themselves.

$260!? That is cheap! How long does it usually take them to get it done?
I may as well take the wheels down and have a short vacation...
