2003 g coupe won't start

Hey everyone,

Thanks in advance for any help on this. My g has just stopped starting and I can't find a way to get it to start. I tried pretty much everything i could find in the threads, but still no luck. Let me try to give enough info

I have a 2003 coupe with 128k on body
engine has about 50k
Greddy twins with about 5k
trans is pretty much new as i had to get a rebuilt one in march.
Battery isn't an issue
I've replace the cam position sensors. (one twice)
I don't believe the starter is the issue as i just tried replacing that(unless i got a bunk one)
I tried to replace the ignition switch.
I've checked the wiring from the battery to the starter and it looks solid
I've checked the fuses

A did have an engine code for an evap leak, but i didn't think they would stop it, but again i'm no expert. One other thing out of the ordinary is that every once in a while it would come close to stalling when i would try to put the clutch in while i was over 3k rpms, but besides that it would run solid when it starts.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I'll probably take it to the shop later this week, but just seeing if anyone here has an idea to try first.

Thanks again.

idk bad clutch pedal switch?

carbonspeed Sep 5, 2012 06:51 PM

I think it still might be a bad starter. Cause there's a cylinder inside the starter. And there are three pieces of metal grayish looking parts. Those are used up little by little each time you start the engine. They may have worn down. I have an 03 coupe too. I found out that was my problem. Opened up the started, took the cylinder piece. Went to a local alternater repair shop. He measured the cylinder and had one the same size. Bought it for 7$

Im from PA. Some Mennonite alternator repair place.

You might be in lock mode:

2. ESCAPE FROM LOCK MODE

1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Turn ignition switch ON with registered key. (Do not start engine.) Wait 5 seconds.
3. Return the key to OFF position. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice (total of three cycles).
5. Start the engine.
Does engine start?
Yes >> System is OK (Now system is escaped from “LOCK MODE”).
No >> GO TO 3.

Thanks guys, I'm at work atm, but i will try to see if i'm in Lock Mode first. (thanks firefox)

Carbonspeed, I have fully replaced the starter. I'm not sure what you mean by the cylinder piece as mine is basically brand new. Also i'm not getting any sort of turn over. I just receive one click when i try to start and then nothing.

I might try the clutch pedal switch if i nothing above works.

Thanks, Sam

I have verified that I'm not in Locked Mode.

I still receive just one click noise for each attempt to start, no turning at all. Also when I had a friend try starting it with me under the car tapping on the starter i could tell the click sound was coming from the starter if that helps at all.

Think i'm going to pull the starter and take it back to autozone to make sure they didn't give me one DOA.

I've had the starter checked as well as clutch pedal ignition switch, but still can't get this thing to turn over. I'm still just getting a single click on start and then nothing. Anything else to try/check?

SUMATIC Sep 9, 2012 09:13 PM

check your battery connections as well as on the starter (clean your battery cables, check for corrosion). check your grounds.

deasons22 Sep 9, 2012 09:20 PM

Thanks for the reply. I've sanded down the terminals and checked the lines and I can't see anything broken or loose. The battery is reading 12.5v.

SUMATIC Sep 9, 2012 09:27 PM

the sound of one click.
is it a loud audible click, or just the typical click of a solenoid clicking?
meaning, does the starter engage or does the solenoid just click?

deasons22 Sep 10, 2012 04:12 AM

Its just the solenoid click. I'm not getting any sort of turn from it.

SUMATIC Sep 11, 2012 01:19 AM

did you check for a voltage drop at the starter while cycling the key to start?

basically, check for voltage at the starter while the key is turned. must be more than 9.6V

deasons22 Sep 11, 2012 01:46 AM

That I am not sure of and I'll have to see if I can try and test that when i get home this morning. Thanks, for the info and i'll post back late morning early afternoon.

Tried poping the clutch. It doesnt sound exactly like mt issue but i blew a fuse from the reverse light and it caused the car to not start but poping the clutch would

deasons22 Sep 12, 2012 10:48 AM

SUMATIC, I took of the clip and checked the voltage and i was getting over 12v. I just here a click and a vacuum sound from the starter.

KILLERZ, I've checked all my fuses and i'm not seeing anything blown.

Gonna do a little more searching here, really don't want to go to shop.

Thanks for the replies, Sam
