Unhappy I ran over a raised manhole....!

And there's undercarriage damage (in the rear), as it seems as though my exhaust sounds different. It happened at my place of employment and I had no idea what had happened and am wondering if my car insurance will cover the damage or is this something a warranty would cover? I did file a police report thank goodness!
I can't even think straight because I have taken my car back to the Infiniti dealer for all repairs since I've had the car and now I might have to go back there again . I live in the Chicagoland area; what about PepBoys? Thanks much.

I would get an estimate and contact the city- if that sort of thing happens where I live and you are persistent enough, you can get the city to take care of the damages. Again- you have to be persistent. If the city doesn't take responsibility, I am sure your insurance company will step up to the plate. If I were you, I wouldn't take my car to PepBoys to put air in my tires, let alone take care of the sort of damage you mentioned.

Yeah i think the city is at fault for this type of damage. Having a police report that clearly shows that the manhole cover was missing is key. I once witnessed a SUV loose it's whole back axle getting a tire stuck in an open manhole going about 45 mph. It probably totaled the guys truck. Good luck with the repairs.

lol PepBoys. But you should take it up with the city. Almost similar thing happened to my dad since he worked for the city of chicago. I dont remember exactly what happened but he got his car covered by the city.

PepBoys....seriously? Infiniti is a way better idea!

If you have altered the suspension on your coupe they will blame you! If not get an estimate and give it to your insurance company, let them try to get $$ out of the most corrupt city government in America. Make sure you include a pic of the manhole cover with your claim. You pay insurance so they will represent you, make them work for a change....Gary

G35 Coupe
I ran over an a small water man hole about 10 inches in a triangle shape. It cracked my rear bumper underneath. I wrote a claims to the city but they said since it was a water man hole it was the Water districts fault. I wrote the letter to them and they checked my car out, told me to get estimates and they took the cheapest one. So they reimbursed me.

Seen and heard this multiple times from various people. OP, take it up with the city. Hopefully they'll reimburse you for any damages caused by that manhole cover.

Also, I personally wouldn't take my car to PepBoys, but that's on you.

Did it enable your forward or rear defense systems?

Lol this made me think of the G turning into a Transformer and beating thr **** out of the manhole, then transforming back into a car to remain inconspicuous.

U p d a t e!

State Farm is handling the biz...thank G-oodness! My 2006 Baby~G is currently at a reputable shop w/repairs (don't know what they are yet) to begin on Monday. I will definitely be asking for photos of the damage....then again, I hope to be there to take pix myself.

The incident happened on the grounds of my place of employment (outside of Chicago) and we have our own police department I over an "unpaved manhole" is what the officer called it. And because the car "sits low"....

To be continued.....

Sounds like you need to lift the car first and inspect the damage.

Chances are you either:

Hit the oil pan on engine/transmisssion.

Hit the middy on your car (Mid exhaust pipe) and caused a exhaust leak hence the change of tone.

or both.

I would have the undercarriage inspected.

In driving thru center Pennsylvania I got to the edge of the road because of road kill in the left center. part of the road which was asphalt then broke off. The piece measured 18" wide X 3 foot. this caused my tire and alum wheel to sink in about 6" popping tire an bending the wheel..applied to that county for reimbursement. and was denied. since it was under the minimum of $250. I paid to have wheel straightened and tire remounted and balanced. $105...today that roadkill looks softer to me...drive at your own risk
