Squeal on passenger side when cruising!?

I am starting to get this really annoying, high-pitched squeal on the passenger side of my 6MT that comes and goes irregularly as I'm driving. Sometimes it's pretty quiet and other times it can get really loud, but will stop periodically if I tap the brakes. Anyone else have this problem before? I wonder if it's just a bad axle (?)... On that note, these d*** Brembos have been squealing since the day I got the car (I'm at 20K miles), but I rarely brake hard and they are still as firm as they were when I brought it home from the dealer. 'Funny thing is, they only squeak when breaking lightly; push a little harder and the squeaking stops. Arghhh! I know I'm not the only one on here that's had to deal with this, but how am I supposed to know when the pads are really ready for replacement if they squeal from the get-go?...

Other than that and the cheap spring divider in my [sorry excuse for a] cupholder breaking off, I still love this car (just a stomp on the gas or a glance at its good looks when I'm getting out of it reminds me of why I got her...among other things )...

Hmm.. you might want to clean your breaking pads? Maybe there some random crap on there that squeals when it's slightly touched but get silenced when it completely touches the disks.

I actually just started having this issue this week. It's rather light so I only hear it at speed and with the window open. And very hard to hear if the radio is on at all. It's likely the brake. Not sure which one, but a quick visual inspection today revealed my right rear brake pads are not as secure as I would think it should be. Typically, a pad is wedged tight enough between the rotor and the piston that it should not be moved so easily. Maybe the piston seized? I dunno. I'm probably going to take a closer look this weekend.

Nothing to do with the brakes. It's the wheel bearing wearing out due to a too-tight factory spec.
There is a TSB - take it to the dealer.

I took my car to the dealer for the same exact problem - the dealer diagnosed it within 2 minutes. They ordered some parts to fix this.

hmm, is that really the problem? i'm having a similar problem, but i thought that the weather stripping was wearing down so there was a hi pitched squeal at high speeds.

I'm not sure if I'm having the same problem as you guys, but let me know if this is what you are talking about: When I accelerate, I hear a high pitch sound for the first couple seconds and then it goes away. It's kind of like the sound of a super charger but not as distinct...and I don't have a sc! Is this the same sound you are talking about? If I take it back to the dealer, should I remove my Z tube first??

I had the same problem with my sedan. I took it to the dealer, they said it had something to do with a loose nut, well that was full of crap, my car still does it. If anyone is got answer I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

I have the same problem as Sundeviljay has. Real faint whistling sound when accelerating, especially when the car is about to change gears (5AT). Don't know what it is. Let me know if anyone knows how to fix this, or if it even needs to be fixed. I also have a Z Tube.

Unhappy More unpleasant noises

Man, now I'm also starting to hear grinding noises when I turn the wheel sometimes! Is this part of that wheel bearing issue also? Where can I find a description of that TSB? Thanks.

P.S. For those that have replaced the pads on their Brembos, what kind do you recommend for the best price and quality (preferably ones that don't squeak or give off a lot of brake dust), and where do you get them? I'd do a search, but I don't have the time. Thanks again!

I'm gonna be at the dealer next week for this problem. I'll get you the TSB number.

Hey Speedoholic, did you get the TSB info yet? I'm taking my G to the dealer on Thursday. Thanks.

On a side note, I noticed you're from Stamford, CT--very cool city (but not as cool as Fort Lauderdale; LOL) . I used to work for them as an intern in '98.

Hey fldrummer,

Unfortunately I ran into some problems at work last night that prevented me from going to the dealer. I rescheduled it for this coming Friday. I'll keep you posted.

As to Stamford being a cool place... well, the only cool thing about it is the weather... If not for my wife and her family I would have moved my a$$, my G (and the wife <wink>) to sunny California long time ago...LOL

Fldrummer, Sounds to me like your issue may be serious if you're now getting grinding noises along with the sqealing. Is there any problems with braking effectiveness, such as pulling to one side or the other or any other, or other symtoms?
From what you said initially, I guessed a glazed brake pad or 2 which isn't serious and easily remedied, but now the grinding may indicate something more serious.
If there is any doubt as to the safety of the ride, let Nissan know what is happening. They may want to trailer it back to the shop for service.

Take care
C.

Well, I took it in today, but they could not get the noises to occur while test-driving it, so they could not diagnose it (gee, how did I know that was going to happen? hmmm) and said there were no such TSBs about squeaking sounds on the coupe. They lubricated something on the brakes (can't recall what, exactly). At least they were honest enough to tell me my brake pads were only half-way worn down. 'Guess I'll have to wait for the problem to become a regular occurance to get anywhere on this!

fldrummer,

Sorry to hear about not being able to duplicate the problem. Don't give up, it took me two visits to the dealer, before I took a tech for a spin on a 3rd visit and the squeak finally woke up to life. My car is at the dealer as we speak for that same problem. I'm picking it up on Saturday morning. I promise I'll get you the TSB number.
