Auto drivers, how's the triptonic?
 

Sup drivers, I've still yet to drive an automatic coupe. So for all you auto owners out there, I got a few questions for you. What's your initial thoughts on the manumatic mode that is optional in your cars? Quick response time? Fast shifts? Smooth downshifts? Do you drive it often?
Coming from a manual, I've driven a few different cars triptonics modes, mostly sport cars, and I really like it. My favorite part is the fact that I can just switch it over at any given time, it's like the best of both worlds. Now I'm not here to argue which transmission is better I just want to know if the triptonic mode in the coupes are any good.
I read some places that the older models were a bit buggy but they fixed that in the 05+
I'm currently still on the hunt for a trade for an automatic 05 but it's not working out to well yet, and I want some info on what to expect.

It's reasonably quick. And for those who want something a little faster a 200$ upgrade halves shift speed with stronger springs.

i use manual mode when i race or on onramps to get the best of all the power in a straight line, for everything else auto does it just fine. In stock form shift 200 rpm before your actual target(EX, 6600 for a 6800 redline shift) as there is a short delay. Otherwise automatic is alls i want.

There's a definite lag in the shift. Other than that it rev matches well when downshifting and pretty easy to use.

Its fun but the lag is a real damper.

Too much lag. I think i've used it only a couple times since my initial purchase when i bought the car. I really only use it if merging/creeping into traffic at a slow roll and don't want the trans to shift into 2nd too early.

Other than that, i'm not really a fan of any manumatic mode on auto transmissions. I'm too much of a clutch-pedal junkie and the feel is just not the same at all to me.

It is the exact same lag in manual mode or automatic. The tiptronic doesnt speed up or slow down the shift, it just gives drivers lacking a man pedal some semblace of self respect.

I have an '07 FX, but same transmission as the G. The lag isn't bad, not that noticeable compared to other cars I've tried. There is a tiny delay from the time you select the gear to when the car actually shifts. It's not bad, much better than my old IS350, but more than my 335. Downshifts aren't great, they are abrupt, especially the 3-2-1. So the only time I downshift is 4-3 if I have to pass in the city. Honestly, it loses it's appeal rather quickly just like most manu-matics.

I have a Stillen VB on the car, and it helps with the actual shift speed. But it doesn't do anything for the lag between gear selection and actual shift.

Speaking from experience don't mess with the tiptronic thing just stick with the manual it lags and I don't know what year you were looking at but the early ones were really screwy. Just stick with a manual you will be much happier.

Also, I don't know anyone that drives purely manumatic. Nearly everyone only uses it to pass/in tight situations where you need to make sure you're in the proper gear (like merging). It's definitely not comparable to full-blown manual.
