Is my gas mileage really this bad or do I have a Fuel Guage issue

Happy new year everyone!!! I had a question about my 2006 Coupe.

Ok first off i know the gas mileage on there cars arent the best, but if I go by my gas guage im only getting 17mpg highway. However heres the issue, my gas guage fluctuates when i drive. Its doesnt fluctuate like from a 1/2 to 1/4 tank, but it flucate between 1-2 dashes on the gas guage.

The main issue is when I cut the car off and turn the ignition to check the gas. I can be above the "EMPTY" dash that before i cut the car off, but when i turn it back on, it will drop below EMPTY (which causes panic run to the gas station). However, when i start driving the needle starts creeping back up over the EMPTY dash, so i really dont know how much gas I have left.

The other thing is when i put gas back in the car. When its empty (or when it says) when i put 3 or 4 gallons back in, I always go up to 1/3 of a tank. So idk whats going on.

I did the guage cluster test that i read another thread and my gas needle reads one dash under half, is it supposed to be directly at half?

Thanks

Are you using premium? That seems very low mpg for highway. I have a sedan and get 20mpg around town. How many miles do you have on the car? Over 100,000 you need a tune up.Do you fill up and check your mpg? I find ethanol gives me lower mpg.

Needle seems about right for me. I get the same issues. My city MPG is terrible, probably like 12ish.
I find that after a lot of uphill driving, or parking up hill. The needle reads 1-2 notches lower than it should. And the opposite when going down hill. It's based on the driving being done. Highway though I get very good numbers. Easily 20ish or more.

I use only premium. I only have 54k miles.

Now i havent tried filling it up yet. That may be the next thing ill have to do to see what my real MPGs are. I do believe that ethanol is playing an issue with bad mpgs. My brothers TSX isnt do so well on gas either.

But that is what i don't understand. I drove 90% highway and only got (based on gas guage) 18MPG. That almost the same as my dads truck lol. Im going to have to bite bullet and fill up to see whats really going on.

Try to keep atleast 1/4 tank in your car to prevent the fuel pump from sucking up too much crap at the bottom in the tank. I would say run some fuel injector cleaner through your car..might help with the MPG.

Classic case of the floaters in the tank. They get dirty over time and don't work right. I had mine removed and cleaned. Solved the problem for about a year.

How exactly are you calculating your MPG?
I'd expect a bit higher for highway unless if you're cruising at some high *** speeds

I do about 1/3 city and 2/3 highway. On a long trip, I usually get around 22-23MPG. I ONCE got 27-28 but that was going 55-60 for about 3 hours which fkn sucked. I did notice better mileage for a while after I used SeaFoam. I don't put it into my gas anymore since one time there was an awful ticking sound from my engine. It went away after a gas refill. Now I only use SeaFoam under the hood through that vacuum tube.

Ok i just did the tradition check of the mpg. I filled the tank until it clicked. Drove 48 miles than filled the tank again. I used 2.89 gallons which equals 16.3 MPG . That was 30% highway and 70% city. And with two 5mins cold start warmup. I guess the gas needle isnt lying. I guess the winter grade gas is causing this car to be a hog. On the bright side my bros tsx is barely getting over 20mpg.

Im going to try some of that lucas ethonal treatment. Has anyone tried that yet?

EDIT:

Oh BTW. With the right tires this car is pretty damn good in the snow, and it fun when you want it to be. But ill save that for another thread

That's actually pretty good numbers since it's 70% city.
And I agree with the winter grade gas. My MPG plummeted as well, can only just ride it out for now.

These cars hate hate hate seafoam in more than tiny quantities. The oem block seems to have VERY little tolerance for jarring loose carbon\oil clumps or sludge.

As to the OP you mentioned winter grade gas... if you switched brands and or octane ratings until yo reset the fuel map the engine ecu will hate you and reward you with terrible mileage until 4+ full tanks of gas.
