Hello All -
I need to swap a used motor into my 2004 G35 Sedan 6MT.
I've located two of them in a local wrecking yard, but although both are 2004 G35 Sedans like mine, the wrecker says they won't work in my car because they are only good for build dates up to 09/2003, and my car was built 12/2003.
I thought all the motors were the same in 20003 and 2004, and the changes came in 2005 with the "Rev Up" motor. Maybe it's the ECU that's different?
Can anyone tell me why the 09/2003 and earlier build date motors won't swap into my car, or can it be done but with a minimum of modification or fabrication?
All help appreciated.

I'm no expert but I thought that as long as they are from a G35 6MT from 03/04 it shouldn't matter... even if it came from a Coupe.
You could even get one from any 350Z of those years if I'm not mistaken.

That's what I thought - but the wrecking yard (who is a major player and sells hundreds of engines per year) said, very specifically, that I need a motor built after 9/2003 and they wont sell me or warranty any other engine. They have two in stock, but both are prior to 09/2003 build dates.
Hoping someone here can give me some solid info I can provide them to show the 09/2003 motor is OK, OR to show ME why the 09/2003 motor.e won't work so I will stop wondering and pursuing it.

You could try calling your local parts department at the nearest large Infiniti or Nissan dealership and see if the guy there knows much about this stuff.
The guy in charge of the parts department at my local Nissan dealership is a wealth of knowledge for stuff like this. Anytime I go in there to buy a part for my G35, I end up talking to the dude for like 45 minutes about all sorts of random techy stuff related to Nissan/Infiniti. I must say that I was very surprised the first time I met the dude and realized how well he knew his stuff.
I wouldn't expect every guy in charge of the parts department to know everything.. but it can't hurt to call up and see if or what they know.

I believe its because the early sedan motors had a clutch type fan rather than an electric fan, so you need a later model non rev-up DE.
If their motor came from a pre 9/03 coupe I believe it would be fine. Maybe the 2 motors they have are from early sedans.

Thanks guys, and Yep - both motors are from early sedans (pre 09/2003 build).
