Peculiar "Thunk" when slowing

We have noticed an oddity recently on our '04 Automatic Coupe. Sometimes, when coming to a slowish stop we hear a thunk from the rear that each time makes you look back thinking someone has gently bumped you in traffic.

Any suggestions what might cause this or anyone else experience it?

Travis

Your spare tire might be loose. check torque.

Also check your contents in the trunk...like your factory jack, hook, etc.

Me too

I have noticed this as well and has really been bugging me. I will be at a complete stop and it feels like someone has hit me from behind. I always look back and it freaks me out. It doesn't do it everytime I stop but it does do it quite a bit. Does anyone know what this might be?

If it's not a noise but a small surge forward, it could just be your car downshifting. It usually happens when you are slowing down slowly and are at a slow speed (10 mph or so, if not less).

I get a similar thunk when slowing in MM to a stop. It's especially noticeable when the engine and trans are not warmed up.
