Adding an MP3 player?
Adding an MP3 player?
What is the range of alternatives for adding an MP3 player to my soon-to-arrive G35 Coupe? I figure the complete stereo system replacement option will be too intrusive and expensive to make it worthwhile. I don't need a lot of additional oomph, just want the flexibility to play mp3s. Thanks!
Re: Adding an MP3 player?
I have an Alpine CHA-S634 mp3 changer. I was controlling it with a 7995 mp3 cd player, but not anymore. Im trying to find the FM modulator that you must have to be able to use it, i think its CRA-1667. Thats one option.

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
I have the Kenwood music keg installed in the trunk of my car. It is being controlled by the KCA-R70FM modulator, which is installed in the compartment on the top of the center console (I don't have nav). When I want to use it, I flip the lid open and it is there. Otherwise, I leave it shut and you can't tell it is there. I am very happy with this setup.
Re: Adding an MP3 player?
Thanks for the responses! I've been looking around on the web a bit, and it looks like either a changer or a hard-drive based unit controlled by a FM modulator is probably what I need.
I won't have the Nav system, so it seems like the unit could fit in the "extra glove box" and the controller in the compartment above the receiver.
How much should I plan on spending (including installation - I'm not up to the task)?

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
This is what I'm considering. It's a portable player with a built-in FM transmitter.

Thats a pretty interesting little unit. Tons of features. Not a bad price either. After reading the features page, i was expecting it to be around $500-$600.

correction: FM Tuner, not FM transmitter (meaning it has FM radio reception)
It has line-out so im sure you can get one of those "line-out to tape-deck" things to play it in your car
This looks like a temporary solution, not a permanent mp3 solution for your car

A very interesting alternative - THANKS!
Rambo: I don't know - it sounds like it's truly wireless (from their website):

Like listening to digital music, but wish it was wireless? Neuros gives you portable digital music without wires using the MyFi feature. MyFi allows you to broadcast the music on your Neuros through any FM radio. Like the one in your car. Or your kitchen. Or your coworker's boombox. MyFi automatically scans the FM radio dial for an available frequency and broadcasts using all digital stereo encoding, just like broadcast towers used by professional radio stations. Roadtrip for hours with your digital tunes and your Neuros. The operating range for MyFi is up to 20 feet (range can be limited by several factors including the quality of the FM radio receiver, geography and FCC regulations).

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
I kinda like this setup:
Ipod+Transpod
Looks good, and you can easily remove your Ipod and take it with you.

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
I wonder how the sound quality is affected by a wireless connection. If it's anything like my extra wireless surround sound speakers for my home system, I'm not sure it will work.
The ipod setup looks great - but it works only with Macintosh?

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
no they make a windows ipod version too, same pricing i believe
sound quality should be just fine, not as good as a CD, its just as good as your typical FM Stereo radio station with good reception

Transpod = $100
10GB ipod= $300
15GB = $400
30GB = $500
overall not a bad deal because you can use it wherever you go!

Re: Adding an MP3 player?
Rambo, I wouldn't call it a temporary solution. It's just a solution that doesn't require any mucking with the car's stock stereo. It's a portable solution. Plus, I like the built-in nature of the FM transmitter, without having to spend the extra $100, of the Neuros v. the iPod. The Neuros is also upgradeable and will soon support additional formats, such as Ogg Vorbis, if that's of interest to anyone.
