Knock/shaking happening at idle?

Knock/shaking happening at idle?

Just recently in the past day or two my service engine soon light came on, and probably a day or so before that, I’ve noticed a weird knock that happens every 2-3 seconds when I’m idling, I feel it in the whole car and hear it. My idle is regular, and it only happens at full operating temperature. I did notice when I put my clutch down, it kind of quiets the knock and doesn’t shake my car, but when I let my clutch out, it starts right back up. For the record, I do have the “ticking” noise coming from under the hood. It’s been like that since I’ve got the car at about 88k miles. I’m currently at about 91k. A mechanic told me the tick was from the timing chain, and I’d like to think this “knock” like noise and slightly shake is unrelated. I have an 04 6mt coupe. Any help would be great, thanks guys!

Sorry prob sound like a noob but I don’t know what you mean. Isn’t DTC dynamic traction control?

Oh okay, I never had it checked. So I’m not sure what the code is actually for.

When your service engine light turns on it's because the engine has detected a malfunction in one of the various engine systems. The sensors, actuators, and other engine controls are tied together through a singular "engine control unit/module" (ECU/ECM depending on what the manufacturer calls it). When the ECU detects a malfunction it creates and stores a diagnostic trouble code that can be read by plugging in an OBD2 reader to the plug down near the hood release inside the cabin.

Typically the code looks something like P#### with all the numbers filled in. Each relates to an exact sensor or device, or particular set of parameters that are not working properly and knowing this code is the first step towards properly troubleshooting what the problem is.

Sometimes it's as simple as the gas cap not being screwed on which throws an evaporative system malfunction DTC, sometimes it's a complex and expensive problem.

It would be helpful if you have the codes, but I would recommend checking your oil level and condition. These engines are very sensitive to this.
