Can somebody give me some ideas of where to look. My fuel gauge hasn't been right ever since I bought the car 2 years ago it would never read completely full the past week or so it's been reading empty even though I filled it up. Now also within the past week actually more like the past 3 days I had three hard starts it wasn't bad it just didn't start as quick as usual. Not today today I went to start my car it was a hard start and there was no idle at all it acted like there's no gas in the car about 3 days ago I filled it up after filling it up last week and with the gas gauge still not working it took $22 to fill up I was thinking I still have gas left over from last fill up could it be that something caused it to take only $22 of gas and I'm out of gas I'm going to try putting gas in the car but what else could it be

 

There is a defect on the evaporative tube that can prevent the gas pump from filling the tank yes, typically when the pump stops I slowly add more fuel and LISTEN to hear how full it is since the pitch changes as it starts to fill back up the fuel tank neck.

You might simply be out of fuel, it's also getting colder and since you've had some hard starts your battery is probably either worn out or the electrical connection is corroded ( or both). I would start with those items.
