Question on dealer add on options
Question on dealer add on options
I just bought my 05 6MT tonight and when I go to sign I get the standard "Here is what we are offering to protect your investment" options and just wanted to get your opinions on one of the options. I have pretty much decided against the extended warranty (7 year, 100k miles - $1860) and the lo jack, but am thinking about the "Finishing Touch Protection Package." For 5 years, I get a guarantee on the outside paint, including fading, oxidation, loss of gloss, permanent hard water etching, industrail fallout, bird droppings, treesap, and acid rain. The interior is protected against fading and permanent staining caused by food, drink, and oil based stains. (I copied most of that word for word). I believe they put a teflon coating on the outside, not sure about the inside.
With some of the posts I have read about the substandard paint job on the cars, I was thinking about getting this, especially considering I have a lot of seagulls where I work. It does cost $695 though and only runs for 5 years. Just wanted to get other people's opinions. Thanks.

i would save all that money.. just change your oil regulary and do your maintenance and it'll last you LONG after you've out grown her... As for your paint and stuff.. wash and wax her, keep her clean and treat her well and it'll also last.. put a roof over her head and the cover on when she sleeps.. Tint and front windshield cover will do her good on sunny days
seriously lol dont buy all that stuff.. go do something else...

Thanks for the replies. I will have to ask my insurance agent about the savings with installing a lo jack. So the paint is not as bad as some people are saying?

Not arguing against Lojack at all - just saying the insurance break may not be as much as some have implied.

i had paint protection put on my former vette. biggest waste of money i ever spent. as others said... just wash and wax... does the same crap. i am more worried about paint chips. why not pump that money into a nice clear bra? i now have boomerang installed on both of my new vehicles (similar to lo-jack i think). i think it's well worth it. my vehicles were stolen back in november... the added tracking gives me peace of mind. losing your car is the worst disaster anyone can ever go through.... ie. no car for a few months, hassle with insurance, etc...
I talked to my insurance agent and installing lo jack would only save me $18 a year. Not worth it in my opinion. I live in a low crime area so that may be why. Also, living in San Diego, my car would probably be chopped up in TJ before I even noticed it missing.
The "paint protection" is a ripoff. Just Zaino the car yourself.
From what I've read, it sounds to me is that some colors chip easier than others. It seems like black and red chip the easiest.
For what it's worth, my Caribbean Blue G has 3500 miles now and I haven't seen any chips yet (knock on wood). I live in Florida and bought the car in Baltimore, and I drove it over 900 miles before I could get a clear bra installed. It didn't get a single chip (I looked as hard as I could) in the drive from Baltimore to FL. I guess it was luck and careful driving (staying as far back as possible from big trucks).
