Need opinions,help. Anything.

My 04 coupe was leaking oil, took it to a friend he said he had fixed it, took the engine covers apart & resealed them with nissan silicon because the original guys who had re built the engine used bootleg silicon. He replaced spark plugs, he said my oil pan had a dent so he banged it out. A week or so passed everything was fine & then suddenly the leak got worse ; today (10-25-18) i took it to a mechanic close . I just moved to Las vegas from California so i found the mechanic on yelp. He charged me 54$ to diagnose the car. He told me my STEERING RACK,PINION,TIMING COVER GASKET,OIL COOLER GASKET & LOWER OIL PAN GASKET are all leaking. He’s charging me a total of 2,533.33 to fix everything including a engine steam clean. What do you guys think?

Don't be silly and pay $2500 for some leaks. If it's not leaving a puddle on the ground just ignore it... If it is it should be pretty obvious where the leak is, and you can buy a $5 gasket and install it yourself or find any honest shade tree mechanic if you don't want to get royally shafted. If you're also leaking P/S fluid try some power steering stop leak first before you pay any money.

Anyone who offers to steam clean a computer is a no-go in my books.

OP please only make 1 thread per topic. This is the third thread I've opened about the same subject so I've closed the other 2. I'm with Urban, that's way too much money to spend fixing some leaks and cleric made a great comment about steam cleaning the motor.

The gaskets are about a combined 10 hours of labor tops, the timing chain gasket requires complete disassembly of the front of the engine, at $120/hr and one $10 bottle of Permatex Ultra Grey rtv gasket. The steering R&,P with new inner/outer tie rods is about $350 in parts and another 5 or so hours of labor for an estimated $2160 or so.

I would get a second opinion on what EXACTLY is leaking before paying random Yelp mechanic.

Make sure anyone doing work on your car actually has a business and is bonded/insured in case they royally screw things up.

This is exactly why I started doing g my own repairs so many years back, mechanics are EXPENSIVE and those labor hours rack up quickly.

You, can replace the oil cooler gasket for 10 bucks, 22MM socket, and 10 extra minutes during your next oil change.

Check the R&P for seepage or sometimes the fluid pools up in the inner tie rod boot. If you're not loosing PS fluid though; I wouldn't even worry about it. My Audi has had a leaking R&P for years and never had issues..until the PS cooler had a hole rubbed in it. Swapped that out with a 20 dollar salvage part and all is good and the R&P still leaks! lol. Like someone said a R&P from like RackDoctor is a couple hundred bucks and the rest is labor in getting the damn thing out.

The oil pan is just RTV or you can use Fel-Pro gasket ( I put one though and it leaks).

Where is it leaking from on the cover? That is also RTV and I had to do my timing chain, so it's no fun to do that and that would be very expensive.

Did you have the valve cover gaskets replaced?

Just look up "Permatex Ultra Grey" iflts the gasket material Nissan recommends but be aware that once you bolt the pieces together it has to sit for 24 hours to cure.

RTV is a type of silicone thats used to make gaskets. You can probably find some videos on YouTube to see what I'm talking about.

RTV stands for "Room Temperature Vulcanizing". It was developed by GE in the late 60's or early 70's. As someone mentioned, you have to let it cure at room temperature for 24 hours before you introduce any fluids. Being in Vegas, you shouldn't have to worry about low temperatures, but it may take longer to cure in lower temperatures.
