New to me G35 coupe

Hello everyone! I just picked up my first Infiniti. It’s a 2004 with just under 160k on the clock. I’m moving here from the CorvetteForum. I’ve owned a couple C6 vettes the past few years but after wrecking my last one, I wanted to do away with some unwanted debt and decided against buying another one. So here I am! I plan to use this as my commuter car but would like to do a little exterior modding. My only thoughts right now are to have the tail lights tinted, powder coat the wheels, and swap the headlights for black ones. Maybe some black emblems as well. I do have a couple questions though. With the C6 corvettes you could remove the lights and pop them open after heating them in an oven. However corvette headlights were extremely expensive and I’ve found that Infiniti headlights aren’t. Should I buy a new set or pop these and paint them? Also, this thing has more pep than I expected but it’s definitely not the roaring V8 I’m used to. What would be the best bang for your buck performance mods to get a little more out of the car without getting too crazy?

Nice coupe and have fun with the mods. I'm just getting started on mine as well. I need to replace a cat on mine, so thinking of changing to High flow cats. I haven't taken the lights of, but I have noticed you can get brand new smoked replacements for a few hundred.

Congrats on the new car!

5/16th plenum spacer, high flow cat, used 350Z intake tube and the airbox from a 2005-2007 6MT equipped G (rev-up airbox). Unfortunately the gains from the G are nothing at all like an LS motor, Once you have those installed you can go the route of an Uprev tune and it's about a 25whp gain on a stock motor but the overall feel is MUUUUUCH better.

If you have a 5AT equipped G you should seriously look around for the TransGo shift kit, you can pick up the 3.5 final drive differential for pretty cheap as well, if this was a strictly highway commuter you might not go that route since it will affect cruising rpm, if you wanted maximum punch there are a couple of differentials geared even higher but those will GREATLY affect highway cruising rpm.

I would STRONGLY recommend replacing the rear differential bushing in the subframe with a urethane one, it's the weakest link on the entire car, if you're a DIY kinda guy it's a piece of cake since the bushing race is made of aluminum so you can just drill out the rubber bushing with a holesaw and use a sawzall to lightly cut a notch out of the bushing race.

Here's the gear ratio chart so you know what differential to get, I think all the later 6MT ones were a VLSD too which is nice for city use.

If you wanted more pep an inexpensive dual exhaust like the HKS replica before getting the tune will net you somewhere in the +35whp range with the plenum spacer/HFC/tune

Plenum spacer (recommend sticking with Motordyne) $250
High flow cats (recommend Fast Intentions but if you want a budget set go with Z1 Motorsports) $350-$500
Z-tube and rev-up airbox $100 maybe, check the marketplace and ebay,
3.5 LSD differential, probably around $450 or so, maybe less if you can find a local one at a pick-n-pull
TransGo shift kit, $300 probably
UpRev tune to bring it all together, here's the big one but it's worth it. you need the cable, the license, and a tune. It costs like $700 for the whole thing I think. You can PM the user Seymore4 if you need more information, he's a reputable e-tuner for us here.

Yes the headlights can be opened in the oven. Under the LIGHTING section there was a sticky DIY that was called something like "painting headlights" I think? It had the temp and time to oven cook your headlights.

Thanks for all the info Cleric. Definitely don’t expect to be getting LS numbers out of this thing without some FI but I’d like to get a little more out of it at least. Can’t wait to start modding it.

Plenum spacer is definitely worth doing. Especially if it gets hot where you are 04pearlcoupe. I've been reading about a few of the aftermarket cold air intakes but don't know if it's worth it for the money. What Nissan made out of the box is high quality as it is.

Welcome to G35 Driver forums! Lots of advice on modifications, some good and others not worth doing! Best mod for our '04 coupes are those '06 projector headlights which are twice as bright and valuable if you ever drive at night! Motordyne 5/16" spacer is a great addition, correcting Nissans design error! As long as your AT is shifting correctly you don't need a shift kit and besides they're brutal when shifting! Lower differential gears, for a daily driver especially with your high mileage coupe it's a bad idea! High flow cats (HFC's) are a great mod but only if you're changing the rest of the exhaust system! Factory exhaust can't handle the extra (lots of it) volume, giving you a terrible sound! Save your $$ and be prepared for the C8 when it shows up!
