Question Any issue with putting an '03 G35 Sedan Engine into an '03 G35 Coupe (minus less HP)?

Hi, as stated above, would I have any problem putting an engine from an '03 G35 Sedan into an '03 G35 Coupe?

Would there be any changes that'd need to be made, or just a simple swap as if they were the same?

Please do let me know. Thank you!

The engine is identical but the early 2003 sedans had one mechanically driven fan. If you end up with that one you will need to swap it out (the fan clutch) for the idler pulley that the coupe is equipped with. Aside from that it's 100% mechanically identical.

As stated, the engines are identical. The advertised hp difference between the coupe and sedan was bogus in 2003 and 2004. If I was swapping a motor into a coupe, I would actually prefer a sedan motor because it probably led an easier life than a coupe motor.

Thank you for your reply again, @cleric670@gmail , but is that a big deal for a mechanic, and how much extra do you think that'd cost me in addition (if worst case scenario having to go to LKQ)?

Note: The Coupe isn't meant to be a racing car. My Mom got into an accident, loved that car (I'd bought it for her years ago when I was making good money.....she's the only owner.......but come to find out, she'd actually prefer a Coupe as my sister has one and she likes the Coupe a lot better....so, I'm just trying to make her happy and get her what she wants or'd loved to have, regardless of the year.

Thank you again!!

Thank you for the reply @kelman81 !

I looked up both 2003 and 2004 G35 Sedans and they both say 260hp.

I looked up both 2003 and 2004 G35 Coupes and they both say 280hp.

So, the actual specs/advertising of the aforementioned isn't correct? And I only mention the hp difference because I didn't know if it would make a difference in swapping the engine....maybe one being bigger as I'm not a mechanic.

And the Sedan engine is great. I bought it for My Mom new, she's the only owner, and initially she liked the Sedan for several years, but one day My Sister got a G37 Coupe loaner from Lokey, and I think My Mom fell in love with the Coupe. Yes, that one, but also Coupes in general. She's definitely not looking for speed.

But is the Horsepower really different than what's specified?

Thanks again!

You are just asking the same question again which we just answered. The engines are identical if from same generations between coupe and sedan. Go to rockauto and you will see the long blocks are the same part numbers for coupe and sedan. Give either to an honest mechanic and he won't see any difference.

Plenty of horsepower difference (none) from historical discussions on the board. Here is one: https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-...g-engines.html

Your mom, sister, horsepower, car ownership history and preferences....okay, fine....not related to engine swap and dilutes the conversation. But congrats on the long term ownership.

OP be aware if the sedan engine was from an early 03 it's run by a different ECU which I believe will need to be swapped as well (I could be wrong on needing to swap). You can tell visually if it's still in the car, the trunk of the early 03's has what is called a "doggy door" which acts as the trunk release.
