interesting story + question

So, the story goes like this. I work nights and was headed out to lunch at 10:00pm. When I get close to my car I see site security and 2 police officers. I'm starting to get concerned because there have been some thefts on site. I get to my car and right away one of the officers asked me if the G is mine. I reply yes(getting worried). He then says well do you know who owns this car and point to a brand new GTO next to mine. I say no, I don't know who the car belongs to. Well, to make along story short they had clocked the GTO at 110 in a 40 mph zone and were looking for the owner. I guess the owner split inside the building and the police missed him. The car was brand new and didn't have plates yet. All the car had was the temp paper ones they give you here in till your permanent ones come in. After that I split and when I came back from lunch the police were gone and the car was still there. I checked it out and didn't a ticket or note to the driver.

This scenario got me thinking. What do the police do in under these circumstances?

Chase u while u are on foot, then someone stops and you jump in thier car and run from the police... See Fast and furious for continuation of story... They can look up the car using VIN or temp plate tag number... So maybe they went to the owners house.

I found out later that the guy was going back to work from lunch. It took some asking around to find out who the individual was. So, it wasn't a car switch or anything.

How do they use the temp plate tag # to find where you live if you're still in the DSP system being processed?

True...how can they find you? This is like the perfect way to get away with a crime.

Screw the database...they can get a judge ordered subpeona, go directly to the dealership and get all his information. They didn't sell him a car without getting his SSN and all other identifying information.

They could but at 10 at night the dealership isn't open. What are the chances that the officers will go to the judge and pursue this?

without actually catching the guy behind the wheel, i wonder though if the speeding ticket/conviction would stand? common sense would dictate that it was the owner who was speeding. but in a court of law, wouldn't it be the burden of the prosecuter to prove an individual was speeding, not just a car (and therefore, the owner)?

this whole scenario confuses me because the same applies to photo-tickets or air patrollers. if they only have a pic of the license plate but not the driver, i wonder how it would stand in court. most ppl just pay the fine, but i wonder how they would fare if they fought it?

photo tickets are concidered by law to be the same as parking tickets. they are assesed to car not the driver, thats why there are no points given out. The car was parked where it shouldn't have been or the car was speeding. It is then on the owner not the state to get rembursed if he was not the one driving.

From what I know each temp tag... still has a record number on it. The numbers to each temp tag is registered to the dealer... The dealer has to account for each tag ... once they find who that temp tag went to (Dealer wise) they will then go to the dealer and track down who they gave that tag to. He will be spoken with soon im sure... Unless the cops forget about it
