BAD clutch at 1600 miles! URGENT

Well I bought my 05 6MT about a month ago, and followed the recommended break in. When i shut down the car, and the clutch is not depressed, the car makes a strange rattling noise. When the clutch is depressed, the noise dissappears. I showed the dealer this (only 1600 miles, so it is a warranty issue) and they have had the car all day. They are now telling me that they heard the rattle and are looking under the car. I am to young for a loaner or rental, and they won't drive me home (about 75 miles away) after they told me it would take about 2 hours. They said they are looking for the problem, and the car may need a new clutch! That was disturbing, considering there is only 1600 miles and the car hasn't been driven hard at all.

Has anyone else experienced this chatter upon shutdown? Should I take the car back tonight and live with the chatter untill i can setup for a ride home from someone else, or should I let them keep it a few days and take a bus home?

Thanks guys

-Mike

Dude, this sound is normal...alot of others have it and have been going strong with 20,xxx +. Its a nasty sound after a nice drive and the car is warmed up. I have it too, try not to worry bro. I noticed it at 2000 miles for myself.

Changing the cluth may or may not fix it. The dealer may have jumped the gun too quickly in stating what he did. They might even say "we can't replicate"...

Here are a few link to sooth your soul...

You might also be getting this noise too:

So a search on "clutch chatter" and you'll be surprised. Mine sound disgusting too to the point where it sounds like two gears scraping each other...but clutch works, so I'm ok.

It's normal. Just get in the practice of pushing the clutch pedal before you turn the car off.....then you won't get that rattle.

I would say that it's completely normal. I've had my '05 for a little over 2 months now, and it makes that sound EVERY time I shut the car off without the clutch depressed.

All day waiting at the dealership??? You should have done a search first and found that this is the normal sound of the 6MT.

It was there for another reason (clutch got stuck half-engaged upon launching, I made a thread about it). With my luck, the clutch didnt get stuck when I got the tech in the car. I let him hear the noise on shutdown, and he wanted to look at it. They looked at the clutch, and compared it to a brand new 05 clutch, and was excactly the same. The new 05 also made the exact same noise. Thanks guys.

Must be frustrating for a tech to just give in and say they all do that, it's normal for this car. Not much left for techs to do these days, if somethings not right they can just blame it on the design of the car.

The sound is not ALWAYS normal peeps! I don't mean to preach, but it's not always normal! Should there be some noise...ABSOLUTELY, but if it's excessively loud, there is a problem, such as in my case when the pressure plate busted according to the dealer. The car had 11K and the noise was really loud before that. I mean loud loud! Radio on and sitting inside the car it was audible. Outside the car, you needed to raise ur voice a bit to have a convo! Since you were already at the dealer, have them check it out. Trust me, if the dealer could have gotten rid of you with a "it's normal" they would have! They would not have wasted their time with it if it was normal.

It is not too loud. The stereo has to be off and the windows down to hear the noise upon shut down. Sitting still in neutral there is no noise, with clutch in or out, it sounds normal. Only chatter is when clutch is out on shut down, and accelerating in first or second from a stop (dealer test drove and discovered this as well). All seemed to be ok.

In diesel1's case, thats a prob, but for mikestar, I wouldve said chill and dont worry bout it, but since you mentioned a clutch getting stuck...thats a whole new can of worms...so I guess going to the dealer IS the right thing for you...although your sound doesnt seem to be that great as diesels, for me, radio needs to be off and windows down as well so its ok..
