Plastic Engine Cover - what is the point?

What is the point of this plastic engine cover that Infiniti puits over our engines. I toook it off and it looked a lot cooler in my opinion. Does anyone know if it is just to make the engine look neater? I would like to leave it off but i dont know if it has a mechanical purpose, like heat sheild or something. Just though I would ask and see what you guys think. I did a search but I didnt find anything.

just for looks, just bought CF cover for a 350z, but i'm returning it since it doesnt fit w/ the crawford plenum.

I took mine off cause the plenum spacer I got was to tall and now it wont fit. It's been of for a while and I don't see any difference.

Very serious.......the flatter and smoother you can make the underside of the car the better the aerodynamics, hence the better the handling ..............really.....

Sure. It also protects the HID coolant reservior from the engine heat.

Actually, since taking mine off, I have noticed approximately 26hp gains on the dyno. This is secondary to the improved cooling of the engine without the plastic cover.

Unfortunately, my scanner is broken, so I can't post my dyno results...

GSM, I think you are referring to the wrong part. The original question referred to the plastic cover on the top of our plenum, not the plastic cover underneath the engine.

You're right Dave (TNX), I misread the post....my bad guys.

The top cover is just dressup, and leaving it off will definitely help cooling.

I like the darn thing. I modified mine to fit my Crawford plenum. I think it finishes off the engine nicely.

Note: These photos were taken before I put on my JDM right side battery cover.
