Hey all - I have a 6MT coupe, and I'm starting to notice a whine coming from the engine (could be tranny?) during aceeleration. I don't remember it before, and it stands out now because it's almost as loud as the exhaust (with the windows rolled up).

I have about 2k miles on it, and was wondering if this was the transmission problem people have been talking about.

I have the same problem, expecially during low gears. Sounds like a mechanical noise. Also when I am in low gears/low RPM and puts the car in neutral I also get this clicking noise. Insights?

 

I think it's normal cuz I have it to. Very noticeable in first gear especially.

i don't know if i hear the same whine... i hear a very pleasing noise when i accelerate, like its singing!

seriously, are you describing a sound that you think is not normal and shouldn't be heard? i have 6MT w/2500 mi and haven't heard any grinding/abnormal engine noise.

 

The only thing I hear is when I'm cruising at ~65mph, I hear a whine from the rear end, but it disappears at 60 or 70. At first, i thought it was the tire noise, but I'm not sure. Any clue?

its engine noise .. mechanical noise... completely normal .. its a car.. its not a soundproof spaceship ... its supposed to make noise ...especially at 65 mph ..

if it was at a stand still and you heard this noise then yah... there 'may' be something up ..

I have the same whine in 1st gear. Could it be the timing chain on the car? I had a 300ZX with a timing belt and no whines. I know that those engines are 2 different animals. Just my .02. I do know that the noise is normal.

 

I have the same sound in the lower gears. I was told that it's because the tranny is a high performance 6 speed. My friend whom has a porsche with a sixie says his makes a similiar noise. I have also heard it in the Supra TT's. I don't won't worry about it until it gets loud. Peace.

I agree...my coupe does this and did from day one. The whine is a high pitched sound which is very noticable when your rolling along slowly in first gear especially when engine and drive train are cold. I beleive its typical of the tranny goodies rotating inside...almost sound like sychro whine...sounds cool though and people look and probably wonder....whats he got under that hood????

The sound reminds me of the sound my girlfriend's Civic makes when the transmission is in Reverse. Not as loud, but similar.

I only brought it up, because I don't remember it being as noticeable when I got the car. It makes me want to mash the accelerator everytime, to let that sexy exhaust growl drown it out.

I know what you mean now.... my buddy said it sounds like a supercharger whine..

yah.. more so when cold .. I actually really like it ..the good thing is its not all exhaust .. but some higher engine noise to mix in with the exhaust ..
only if I had the nerve to let someone else drive my car so I could hear and see it .. with the rims spinning on the highway etc.
but noone drives my car but me. hehehehh

and now that you mention it ...I do beleive it was not a pronounced when new.

Yeah I agree...it sings well with the exhaust.

 

we just ahve a noisy gearbox
when i got my 2nd tranny it wasnt as bad.

i got the same noise, noticed it this morning...so i come a runnin to the forums.
ty for makin me feel ok now...i was sweating it.
with some of the problems people been having with this 6mt.
thx for the input guys...im gonna go to the dealer next week regardless to see if they have additional input.
i need to go anyways.
