Is dealer trying to scare me? VQ teardown.
Is dealer trying to scare me? VQ teardown.
A month ago i had an engine oil consumption test done and ended up buring 2 1/4 quarts in 1k miles. From there a compression and leakdown test were done and my VQ failed both. The only mods i had that were semi related to my engine were a CAI and exhaust, so i wasnt too worried about my warrently being voided. But the service manager kept telling me i better have proof of oil changes or it could be voided. I told him i did all my oil changes myself with mobil 1 syn 5w/30. The oil change issue hasnt been brought up since the first test was done, so i went on assuming he was just trying to scare me,... ok.
He told me that a small block has been ordered and a rebuild will be done when it arrives. They have since made it clear that before they teardown the engine i have to sign papers stating that if they find signs of abuse during the teardown, my warrenty will be voided. On top of that, if my warrenty is voided, i will have two choices. 1: pay $3.5k to have the engine put back together with the oil consumption, constant stinking problems, or 2: pay 10k for the rebuild. I asked what would be considered signs of abuse?, they told me overreving. I told him that there is a rev limiter on the engine for that very reason, and the only way i could "overrev" the engine would be with a new ecu or ecu flash, which i have neither. He said that the rev limiter works during acceleration only, and not if i were to donwshift from 6th to 2nd by accident. I told him i didnt know that.
So my question is , can they actually find "signs of abuse"? and can my warrenty be voided? I thought they have to prove i actually caused the problem and that it didnt develop on its own. Im just very confused right now. Anyone been throguh this situation before, can you shed some light. Thanks guys

If the problem is inherent in the engine . . . I would have to expect that they would have to honor the warranty. I think they are giving you a bunch of crap. Stand your ground!
I am just about to finish my 3rd engine oil consumption test. So far, my G is consuming about a 1/2 pint per the last 2 readings. I think it's safe to say that I will not have to deal with the BS, which you are going through.
What is the year and mileage of your G? Which dealer is performing the work?
I trust you experience a good outcome. Good luck!

ChuckP . . . Here checkout this thread, which was posted by skeleton_cru. He got a new engine after a bunch of BS. There might be some helpful info there for you. I think he called a few people and made a bit of noise. Good luck!

The engine ended up blowing and they replaced it under warranty. They are pulling your chain.

+1 engine for me!
Spun a main bearing in mine. I had been in to service prior with concearns of the engine burning to much oil, so they had noted it in their system. When my engine went, they didn't even question it. Had my car flatbeded to the dealership on Monday, and 1 week later (the following Monday) I was back to pick my car up.... No problems since.
Infiniti KNOWS and are WELL AWARE of this problem, so as long as your claim is legit and not based on problems arising from modifications done to the engine like FI, or lack of maintence (not changing your oil in a timely manor), you'll be OK...
Edit: Oh and in case anyone is wondering, they swapped out the whole engine (long block) assembly. Infiniti doesnt do rebuilds when it comes to engine that have "oil consumption" problems....

That should be good news to read for ChuckP. Actually, it's comforting for me, as well. I am probably going to get through this consumption test just fine. However, it's noted in their system for future consideration.

Just guessing here. I would believe it's where you are near redline and accidently downshift and BOOM. Lotsa money to fix, hence money shift.
Andy 2434- thakns for the link, i had already read evrey page a little whle back when this problem arised.
Ducatiguy- Corporate infiniti balanced the costs of a long block vs. a small block and figured a small block would cost less in the end, so thats what they decided to go with. I would love to have the engine swapped out for a new one, but unfortunatly i have to hope the techs know what they are doing and actually care about my rebuild.
It just sux that I am the only 21 year old with a G that Infiniti of Marin services, and it just so happens i like to mod my car. Actually, I think im the only car with mods they have ever seen.
Thanks to all you guys, ill let you know what ends up happening. I will sleep a little better knowing this is a bunch of crap they are feding me.

Chuck, man I hope they just replace the damn motor for ya! When I was there, I asked them will you be rebuilding it and he gave me this "hell no" look... Maybe it was his way of getting out of a labor intensive job? Who knows? Well, best of luck with your ride... It'll all work out in the end. The down time and wait is what I sucks....
a little bit too late, but for future reference, Oakland Infiniti may be a better dealership to work with in terms of warranty work and aftermarket modifications.
after going through peninsula and Serramonte, who both denied me warranty work on the clicking rear axle due to my springs and wheels, I emailed Oakland Infiniti.
they called me the next day and scheduled an appt. i dropped off my car, got myself a loaner , and they began work on my car, no questions asked. i'm picking it up tomorrow.
best of luck with your situation. if you need any support from the local G35 community, do not hesitate to PM me. there is strength in numbers.
