Do the 6 speeds have rev limiter's?

Or is it impossible for manual's to have rev limiter's. I dont wanna test to see my my coupe has a limiter :o

I think it's around 7100rpm or so.

terryw Aug 29, 2005 01:57 PM

i just redlined it past 7000rpm yestarday by accident, nothing happened, im sure theres a rev limiter according to the magazine reviews. but its probably a bit higher than 7000.

Atooraya Aug 29, 2005 01:59 PM

Ok good, bc i misshifted in a race because it seems you have to SLAM the shifter into second. So i let out the clutch, and floored it thinking i was in gear and it just redlined.

But good thing there's a rev limiter :)

Finiti35 Aug 29, 2005 02:03 PM

Sure there is, or otherwise people like you would be blowing motors left and right

I don't plan on finding this out on my own car, but it's said to be around 7300 rpm or so.

There is a rev limiter on the manual. The rev limiter is controlled by the ECU and, as such, the transmission type does not impact whether the car can have a rev limiter. When you are in gear and try to rev past a certain point the computer simply prevents the ignition system from firing any faster.

Note that this limit is electronic - not mechanical. There is nothing to prevent over-revving in the event of a mechanical mishap (such as errant shifting). For example, if you shift from 3rd to 2nd while at redline in 3rd your engine will over-rev. This is because the rate at which the drivetrain is spinning will push the engine RPMs above the redline. The only way to prevent this would be to use some sort of mechanical rev-limiter that would slow or disengage the driveline components (like disengaging the clutch or applying the breaks). It's doubtful that any sort of mechanical limiter would be safe or effective so, for now, cars limit the amount of mechanically-related over-revving you can do by blowing the engine.

REV limiters come ON ALL cars.

EricIsKlumzyee Aug 29, 2005 04:06 PM

limiter is at 7,200something RPM stock

gspotter Aug 29, 2005 04:10 PM

Just don't mis-shift from 6th to 2nd at 120 mph- goodbye VQ!

mc2 Aug 29, 2005 09:52 PM

there's nothing to limit a mechanical overrev.

if you drop it into second from a higher gear nothing will stop the physics of the tranny and engine and it will over rev.

S2020 Aug 29, 2005 10:32 PM

thanks. good to know

heathG35 Aug 29, 2005 10:39 PM

Ive miss shifted a couple of times it cuts off at 7200

mc2 Aug 29, 2005 11:40 PM

like someone said earlier the rev limiter is only electrical.

there's nothing that can defy the laws of physics. dont' think that your car won't overrev and break something if you shift into too low of a gear at too high of a speed. just a warning.

Atooraya Aug 29, 2005 11:42 PM

thx guys.

thankfully i haven't misshifted from 3rd to 2nd. I think that's my only fear, but you'd have to be kinda brain-hand miscoordinated retarded to do that :o

Chocobo55 Aug 30, 2005 12:02 AM

you can adjust tihe limiter to whatever rpm you wanrt the light to come on.
