Just got my new Car and Driver.

Says:
505 hp, 198 mph, 1/4-mile in 11.7 sec. @ 125mph.
And their test results had 0-60 at 3.6 sec. and road holding at .98 g. Viper still has better road holding, but like others costs more.

Nice. To bad I need back seats in my cars.

Corvette is a fine handling machine. Not to mention the Z06 version. Let's not knock on it simply because it is a "leaf spring". (One that is made of high tech composite, lighter, more expensive to make than coil spring, lower CG, etc, etc.)

Take a look at this post for some analysis on leaf springs:

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum...ad.php?t=13582

I copied some of the highlights:

The big advantages are:

-It weights A LOT LESS than coil springs. One leaf replaces two coils. The two coil springs weigh 3 times as much as the one leaf. Additionally the leaf is placed at the bottom of the car. In addition to removing weight you lower the CG.

-It acts as an anti role bar. The article above explains how this works so I won’t. The advantage is you can run lighter anti-role bars because the springs are taking care of part of the job for you.

-The leaf springs never wear out. The vendor of these springs has never had to replace one due to fatigue failure. Coil springs to were out but you typically don’t notice on smaller, lighter cars. You do see it more on old, heavy Caddies and such. The improved fatigue life was really evident compared to the C3’s steel leaf spring. Thus this is an advantage over coils but not a big one.

What are the drawbacks for the Vette?

-They are expensive. We normally don’t think of leaves as the expensive suspension but in the case of the Corvette, coils would be cheaper. The Vette already has all the parts a coil sprung double A arm suspension would use. Pull the leaf off, replace the shock with a coil over and you’ve converted the Vette. Since the rest of the system is the same, the cost comes down to the price of 2 coils or one spring. Well if it was a steal leaf spring it might be cheaper (remember truck suspension is cheaper because the leaves also act as links).

Seems to me that the C5 and C6 can go around the track fast as well. Look at all their Le Mans victories.

Uhh those cars are nowhere near stock forms that you could buy. Kind of a pointless comparison. Corvettes do handle pretty well, but take it on a track and there are cars out there that will do a dance around it.

How about Lingenfelter Performace, they can make your Z06 that baddest car on the street.

0-60MPH in 1.97 seconds
1/4 Mile: 8.95 seconds @ 153.7

http://lingenfelter.com/documents/CF427TT_eprint.pdf

I can't even imagine being behind the wheel of this car.

It's because of the tires. C6 Z06 runs on runflat stock but even with that on it still beat tons of super car in Nurburgring. Leafsprings or not it kicks ***.

Statistics for those who care... Corvette is not just fast in straight... (granted horsepower helps on track as well..)

Chevy pulled out the obligatory Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times to make the point: With Jan Magnussen, winner of the 2004 and 2005 Le Mans 24 Hour, at the helm, the Z06 clocked a seven-minute, 42.99-second lap of the 13-mile Green Hell, 16 seconds faster than a Z51-equipped C6. Porsche’s $440,000, 604-hp Carrera GT, with a seven-minute, 32.44-second lap, is the only production car to have gone quicker. For perspective, Lamborghini’s $283,000, 580-hp Murciélago clocked in at seven minutes, 50 seconds, and the $452,000, 671-hp McLaren-Mercedes SLR at seven minutes, 52 seconds.

C5-R is in no way the same as a Corvette. For one, it doesn't have a rear leaf, it uses coil springs. Also, they don't even use a Corvette as a base for the car when they build them; It's like an entirely different car that looks simmilar.
