cause they're dumb and they're on crack?

lol i'm jp

depends when you do your first oil change. IMO do it at 5,000miles assuming you change your oil every 2,500 but i would change oil at 500-1000 for the first change because factory adds additives into your oil to help your break-in and you'll have small metal flakes floating around.. when you have an engine that is measured with a mic.. it starts to matter. so basically..

1st change 500-1,000 (good time to use your "free oil change" from the dealer)
- they're gona tell you youre crazy but just tell them you want to do it or your never going to come back
2nd change at 2,500 - continue to use regular motor oil (skip this if you dont beat down on it or your too lazy -__-)
3rd change at 5k and you're free to put whatever you want.. just remember you can NOT put regular oil back in AFTER you put full-syn oil in and to change your filter everytime.

agreed, first change before 1500 with mineral oil... go 3500 on that, around 5K+ you can run whatever you want.

search for 'blackstone' reports to find supporting info.

I've been told around 10k miles by someone who's a chemical engineer and has a G.. forgot his member name, but he sent me a detailed explanation why that late.

it takes a while for your engine parts to wear down from oil.. but the way i drive.. i figure its been through more rotations then someone from 10k anyways (i changed to syn around 7k) lol. I've heard anywhere from 10k to 20k but its all up to you.. you can run regular motor oil the whole life time of the engine and out last guys that use syn as long as you keep up with the maintenance

Ah, keyword: the way YOU drive 155mph huh? I don't think my car has seen the triple digits, actually once. I guess in my case I'll have to wait till 20k miles, lol.

Thats why you just buy those big jugs of motor oil instead of the little quarts =)

lol seriously tho, it all depends on the way you drive.. some of you guys should be doing oil changes every 2k and others can get away with 6k.. but you should do one every 6 months just because the oil and the additives no longer bond as well after a while.

true.. I did 5K, but I had 80% city miles, so my wear might have been more like others 10K. Its true, if you can wait til the 3rd change, then all the breakin will be settled down on a VQ. 10K is the agreed syn switch mileage on the maxima board (also a vq35).

Wow..

It shouldn't matter guys. Please back up your statements as to why one would wait until 6-10k to put in synthetic??

Synthetic is simpy better for your engine. Use it.

will do..

when you first get your car the engine is new.. Yes infiniti runs the engine before giving it to you but thats more for their testing purposes to make sure everything works. When your in the break-in period.. most PCMs will add more fuel (Explaning the crapy mpg before and after break-in) and factory adds additivies in your oil to help break-in (which is why i recommend changing facotry oil out ASAP).

on a new engine your parts will need to wear down with each other and your pistion rings will need to wear down the cylinder walls (ring sealing) do a google search for more info. by putting synthetic fluid in you're adding "smoother" fluids which will not give the engine the correct wear that it needs. this may cause problems for you in the future (100,000miles?).

Synthetic isnt really "better" for your engine.. it just lasts longer and has more additives to protect the engine. but using regular motor oil for 100,000 miles will be the same as syn as long as you keep up with your oil changes.

also your tranny needs the same treatment

I talked to one of the Nissan engineers that came to the Turbonetics open house. He said 1000 miles is enough before switching to synthetic. I don't know where all of you have gotten your information from, but I think my source is as good as it gets since he works on the 350Z for Nissan. I wish I could remember his name. Mike Kojima was one of the Nissan guys, and this guy was the other one. If anyone remembers his name, please remind me.

Hey Guys,

I just had my 7500 mile oil change and when I asked for syn oil at my Infiniti service place, my service representative said that he would not recommend putting syn oil into a VQ engine. I figured he knew what he was talking about but from this thread it seems like a lot of people do it. Any thoughts as to why he would say that (other than the fact that he was BS-ing me)?

I figured a synthetic oil change would make them more money so him telling me not to do it was for a good reason.

Your thoughts?

Since when can't you swap back and forth between synthetic and regular oil? Once you go to synthetic you can't go back???? WRONG!

What is your reasoning behind this statement?
