I know how engines work. Youre ignoring a wealth of information specific to the VQ35. Not to mention general knowlege about VQ35's dynoing better after 5K and mpg increasing... after break-in.....

If you were talking about Honda or Toyota engines, you'd be 'more' correct. I take that back, some Toyota engines sludge because of a few degrees difference of the water jacket temp, so I guess they arent all the same either. All my point is, if youre going to spec a specific oil, you should try to figure out the specific needs of your engine and driving conditions.

it actually topped out a 158mph the 155 was early morning so there was light.. the other pix didnt come out too good but it was 158mph at 6,200ish RPM

Tim can you share this valuable information with the rest of the community? Also I dont think thats true.. The manufacture recommendation for oil is one thing but I think it'll very depending on how you drive, what youre running on, and where you are.

What are you talking about different motors they all have to break in???

so when?????

im getting alot of different advices and i greatly appreciate it. Even though you guys are debating/arguing i am learning things from it which is cool. i just bought the new g so im just trying my best to learn about the car and keep it in good condition through this forum.

the real question is- so when should i start the synthetic? might sound like a repeat but some say right away is ok, some say 5k-6k , some say go wiht 10k, others say right away is bad, some say 5-6k is bad, im just a bit confused.

SO WHAT MILEGE SHOULD I START THE SYNTHETIC?

oh and when should my FIRST REGULAR oil change be at?

its up to u base on what you read here to determin when you want to change to syn.. i did it at 7k but that was a big early.. i just didnt like the feeling of regular.. i had a beater and it had syn in it.. that engine felt smoother going up rpms and comming back down or it could be a mental thing.. lol

I would do an engine, tranny, and diff oil change before 1k cause you have all this stuff floating around.. then again at 5k.. and pretty much every 3-5k or every 3 months after that. I was taught to change the tranny with every engine oil change.. but i do it every 6k instead just because syn is too expensive

Maintenance (this is just me)
Oil Change 2.5k-3k ($25 per cange)
Tranny & Diff - 6k or 3rd oil change ($60 per change)
Plugs - 20k (please torque down ur plugs) (depending platinum are like $2-$3 each)
Clean injectors - 15k (not sure)
coolant - 15k (our tank total holdes 9qts of fluid... duno cost)

think thats it as far as stuff that needs to be changed.. now if your not doing this yourself then you'll be spending alot of money.. but for guys that do it themselves its not really that big of a deal since we're all gear heads. some guys here are doing the same things i am.. some even earlyer.. and others will say "wtf i dont needa do that" but each to their own.. i'm planing to rebuild in the future but i still take care of my ****.

if you guys want i'll make a how-to on doing coolant and engine tomorrow..

On my last two cars i changed to Mobil I synthetic at 500 miles and every 2000 miles
thereafter. I put 125,000 miles on my 300Z without a hint of smoke and it wasn't
driven easy.

i think timW has more info on the VQ but if we're talking about a engine with brand new parts its fine to start using syn.. generally speaking

I thought you were saying all motors were the same and that there was no longer a breakin with Nissan engines... if I read that incorrectly, my apologies.

good stuff here
http://www.g-owners.com/pic_showall....lackstone+Labs

and in the Fluids section of Maxima.org, lots of VQ35 oil reports there.

I've seen a few Honda reports showing metal settled by the first change, plus the characteristics of the engine (smoothness, mpg, hp) also seem leveled off at 1k. Much different than a VQ needing 5k+.

not that it matters, because we may be saying the same thing.. but here is an oil report of mine (which is much like others at this mileage)

at 4500, I still have lots of metal and high fuel dilution

6K miles later..
http://www.g-owners.com/pic_display.asp?id=694

I think the higher Moly is from using Mobil1.

and finally my most recent (you can see the previous 2 samples on this report as well)

http://www.timware.org/pics/g/gc_oil3.jpg

and finally, here's a great one showing oil on a new GC @ 551 miles
