Vibration Diagnosis
Hi everyone,
I'm back with my vibration thread again. I swear I'm the king of bad luck with my car since I got it back in Feb 04. I've got 30,000 miles on it.
Anyways, wondering at least one more time if anyone might have any more advice on why my steering wheel vibrates so noticiably on the Freeway. I've done pretty much everything I can think of (and what others have recommended) and am out of ideas. I've kinda just been bearing with it for the last couple months but its starting to get worse again (either that or I'm running out of patience with it). Its noticeable enough that I can hear my watch vibrate on my wrist and the steering wheel visibally is shaking.
Symptom: When driving on the freeway 65+ I begin to get a vibration in the steering wheel. The vibration lasts for about 6-7 seconds then is completely smooth for about 6-7 seconds. Then the vibration comes back again and so on and so forth. Some days, vibration is really bad.
Tires/Wheel setup:18x8.5 Chrome Fronts with 245/40/18 Sumotomo HTRZ III's with +20mm offset
18x9.5 Chrome Rears with 275/40/18 Sumotomo HTRZ III's with +20mm offset
(are these just crappy tires??)
What I've done so far:
1. I've had the aftermarket wheels balanced with 3 different shops doing it, and 1 of them being a Hunter road force balance (checked for out of round, rim bent, etc.) from a local body shop, one regular balance from the Infiniti dealer, and one regular balance at some other body shop.
2. I have hub centric rings.
3. I've had them torqued in 1-3-5 manner.
4. Checked tire pressure - all are at about 32 psi
I get no vibration up until the freeway. but when I drive on it, I get that circular pattern of no vibration/vibration the entire time i'm on it...i
What i STILL DONT get is when I have my stock wheels on, rides smooth as glass, so it has to be the set up of the new wheels. The guy at the Infiniti dealer said that chrome wheels are just hard to balance and i have to live with it. Anyone have any ideas?
Sorry for the long post I just wanted to be as thorough as possible...

I agree with htownboy, it probably is an unbalanced tire. If not, then it has to be either the rim, did you need a centering ring on the wheel? or a suspension part.
I have an 04 with 32,000 miles, and my car is vibration free and tracks perfect on a flat road. I change out my Pilot Sports in winter with aftermarket rims/snows, and no problems with those as well.........Pull the front wheels off and see if they have/need the centering rings used on a lot of aftermarket rims......
Good luck

replace the wheels..
We tried everything for the vibration... The dealer finally gave me ne wheel and tires.. PROBLEM FIXED. It was the wheels...............
Howerver about 10,000 miles on the new wheels, the vibration came back, and I still have them at 73,000 miles. now dealer won't even look at it anymore.
I think that there is some kind of alignment problem with some of the G's that can't be fixed

Where do you live? Was wondering what the roads are like in your area.
