Rattling noise??
Rattling noise??
Anyone with a 6MT getting this rattling noise coming from under your car? I have taken it to the dealer 2 times now and they keep telling me its normal. Really what is happening is they just haven't been able to recreate the noise, though they think I am just hearing the normal engine noise and I'm making a big deal out of it. I have demonstrated the noise to at least 10 people over the last 2 months and they have all said the same thing: "this is a new car, what the hell is that noise?" It only happens after I have been driving a lot, and I come to a complete stop, put it in neutral and let off the clutch. it just starts rattling or vibrating. then when I shut off the car it sounds terrible as the engine winds down. It sounds like its coming from directly under the car. Any one else experiancing this? I know it can't be normal.

Re: Rattling noise??
Yeah I get that but I've been told its normal for high performance cars. People have gotten the same thing on some supras from what I hear. If you get anywhere with the dealer let us know though.
Re: Rattling noise??
THAT NOISE THAT YOU HEAR IS THE TROW OUT BEARING FOR THE CLUTCH. YOU PROBABLY OVERHEATED IT FOM LEAVING YOUR FOOT DEPRESSED ON THE CLUTCH IN TRAFFIC OR AT LIGHTS. THE TRANSMISSION WILL HAVE TO COME OUT TO CHANGE IT, THATS WHY THE DEALER IS SAYING ITS A NORMAL CONDITION.
Re: Rattling noise??
Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me more about this throw out bearing? What does it do? I thought it was OK to have the clutch depressed, as long as it was all the way in? Maybe my inexperiance got me on this one.

Re: Rattling noise??
I agree, most probably a throwout bearing. Had a 944 Porsche once that did exactly the same rattling thing (when new) when in neutral. I doubt the dealer will be enthuiastic about it's replacement.
Re: Rattling noise??
i am having the same exact noise on mine 6mt. took it to the dealer and they said they didnt hear it. I think it is getting worse. is this something that will eventually break the tranny? Can anyone provide some more detail on how i can get these idiots to fix my car?

And what are my chances of this being covered by warranty? Is this a wear and tear part like the breaks/clutch?
I really do appreciate this guys, I would not have had a clue on what to do about it. So thank you very much.

Re: Rattling noise??
The Throwout Bearing pushes on the clutch pressure plate to disengage the clutch when you put you foot on the pedal. When your foot pushes the clutch, the hydraulics push the release fork against the throwout bearing which in turn pushes on the middle of the pressure plate. The Pressure plate bends outward, thus releasing pressure from the clutch plate on the engine flywheel. If you sit with your foot on the clutch when stopped, you will wear out your pressure plate and T/O bearing. T/O bearings are one of those things that wear in a clutch, along with the clutch plate and pressure plate.

Re: Rattling noise??
guys, its not the throw-out bearing, its a brand new coupe, all 6MT's do this, even on My350Z.com, there is a thread in there with at least 50 replies saying: YES I GET THE SAME EXACT rattle noise.
Someone suggested that it was something hitting the exhaust somewhere. And the sound is lessened when the car is warmed up.
I have had that rattle noise since day 1...i have ignored it till yesterday when i saw that post on my350z.com
I will tell the service guy to look at it at next service.
In the meantime, dont worry about it, alot of people are having the same thing.

Re: Rattling noise??
my coupe as 6600 on it. the rattling noise started about 2 months ago and only seems to appear after the car has warmed up and been driven for 3 or 4 miles. I have always noticed that the tranny is noisey, especailly when taking off from a stop.

jmweidm,
if your rattling is like this, then it's normal. The Supra 6-speed tranny is a Getrag tranny, and so is the one in a Vette. The rattling is a pretty common thing for 6-speed Supra and Vette owners. Our tranny is supposed to be a Getrag as well.
The only place I could find that states that we have a Getrag is this one article. Look at the specs at the bottom of the page to the right.
