6mt Tranny Crapped Out - Need Others With Experience

Over the weekend, when shifting from any gear into 5th, I found that the tranny would grind into gear. I've had problems with the 1-2 shift in the past as well and other gears have been difficult to shift into. Now, this problem cannot be overlooked and Infiniti MUST address it! They can't tell me "no problem with it" anymore.

Anyway, they're pretty much agreed that once the problem is located (duh, its the transmission!), they'll replace the tranny.

What I need is for others, who've had experience with Infiniti swapping out their bad tranny to tell me whether they should also be giving me a new clutch at the same time. I don't know if they should do it because its necessary or if it'd be the "nice" thing for them to do for me.

Please advise!

I am having the same exact problem right now. When cold, I am having trouble shifting into 5th without grinding. I need to set up an appointment with them =/

I had the same problem when shifting into 5th gear, they tried to say it was because I rested my hand on the shifter when driving. So not true, then dealer service manager tells me the sychros are made of brass to save on weight. Maybe this is the problem seems like alot of peeps driving the G35 6Mt 04's are having this issue.

Hopefully my tranny won't go out soon. (I just bought the car like two days ago) But, when the car is cold it's rather hard to go from 1st to 2nd smoothly, and it's always hard to get it into 5th. No gears are grinding, but it just won't pop in as smooth as the others.

Yeah i just bought an 03 6mt coupe(used it had 31,000 on it) and the gears are definitely not shifting smoothly, and i have the same problem with shifting when the car is cold. I'm glad i got an extended warranty, though hopefully i wont have to use it anytime soon lol.

Im taking my 04 6mt in on friday for a few reasons, this being one of them. Ill keep you posted on the outcome. That would be great if they gave me a new clutch to, but i doubt it. By the way, ive got 13,500 miles.

When the dealer replaced my tranny under warranty, they replaced the clutch too at no cost to me, even though my original clutch was fine. They said there was an updated clutch (mine is an early '03), and the factory said they should replace the clutches on early '03's when the transmission is out for replacement with the updated design. Unfortunately, the new clutch had a massive chattering problem, which involved the dealer pulling the tranny AGAIN, and installing a new pressure plate and new flywheel, and I STILL had clutch chatter. The chattering finally went away gradually over 6k miles of driving. The installer probably got oil or grease on the clutch when he installed it, or he didn't align the clutch properly.

The dealer did try to get me to pay for the new pressure plate at about $200, but I told him no f'in way am I paying for a design flaw covered under warranty. They tried to pull the old "but its a wear part not covered under warranty," to which I said "B.S., so is the clutch, yet you're not charging me for that!" They gave in and paid for everything, especially after they saw I had minimal clutch wear, and proved to them I know how to drive a stick (been driving manuals for 15 years).

Basically, if they see your clutch is worn at a relatively low mileage, they'll probably make you pay for a new one. If you have minimal wear and require an updated clutch because you have an early model, then they will probably pay for it.

So, it's all good now. But what a PITA this was.

I'm on my 3rd. transmission, the first went at 6K, grinding to 2nd & 3rd and getting stuck in 3rd. The second transmission was bad from day one, when going from 4th. to 5th. the shifter would fall into the slot for reverse; a new transmission was ordered a few days later... The third transmission has been there since and is perfect; i've put almost 30K on this one and it keeps getting better as time goes by.
FYI - the 3rd one is the new model, the same they started using in the 05 G's, it is a noticable impovement over the previous model.

Forgot to add this... I hope your car is still under warranty because the dealer is obligated to fix this and Infiniti is not repairing these anymore, they are all replaced with the newer model (per the service manager at Clear Lake infiniti).. The clutch is a wear item and it will not be replaced under warranty.

I have an 05 w/ about 1400 miles on it and shifts into 5th gear grind on occasion. Only 5th gear though and I'm fully depressing the clutch when shifting. Dunno if its worth taking it to the dealer yet though.

Mine committed suicide at 18K miles. They did the clutch and trans all under warranty. Clutch seemed fine but they wanted all to start fresh which was fine with me. Just make sure you take it to a dealer who wont give you **** and knows wtf they are doing. All was fine in the end but it was pure HELL to get Inf and the dealer to do it. Good luck!

UPDATE!

I spoke with my dealership and they are replacing both the clutch and complete tranny with the new stuff. So if you're in the same position, expect them to do the complete job. Apparently with 03's, they have to do a clutch since its been updated.

Yeah I have and 04 and same thing 5th gear grinded, they replaced it with a new tranny as well as the clutch, they need to throw in the clutch, they will charge u for a pressure plate though. go somewhere else if they do not give you the clutch.

They made no mention of a pressure plate. If they're replacing the clutch/tranny and the pressure plate is a necessary part, even though its a wearing part, they have to replace it FREE if they cannot use the old one. I think your dealership may have taken advantage of you.
