winter wheels/tires with TPS; necessary?

i have a used set of Z33 wheels. all i have to do is order the snow tires and have them mounted. should i buy 4 new tire pressure sensors or save my money and just live with the dash light coming on everytime i drive?

I just put oem 17's and 50 miles and no light came one. I know it works, cause first cold spell around here, the light came on, and my rears were down somewhat( on the OEM 19's) As far as I know from the guy I bought them from, there were no sensors on the wheels.
will let you know if it changes...

yea i think performance nissan advertises TPS's at $75ea +shipping. tires are going to cost roughly $700 for 17s + mounting. i'd like to save a little bit of money. i've heard from some others that i'd have to live with the TPS warning light on wearing wheels with no sensors.

tire pressure moniters

I just got off the phone with my Infiniti dealer in New Jersey asking them about needing the transmitters on a set of used oem 17 in. wheels that came off a 03 Cpe. that I plan on using for snow tires this season on my 05 Cpe. The parts man says they cost $125.ea.. When I asked what would happen if I didn't put them on, he transfered me to the service dept.. They told me the light would stay on all the time and the "low pressure alarm" would probably stay on as well. They took my phone number and said they will get back to me with a more definite answer. I'm still waiting. Anyone out there have some actual experiance with this problem?

My service manager told me $100 per sensor-125 is too much, unless u like bending over at the stealership-
He also said that about half of those that swap out for winter setups get additional sensors, and half don't.
If you don't have them on, it's very possible for the low pressure lights to go on-but I mean that's it. It's not like anything mechanical will be adversely affected by not having the sensors on. U can save the money, if you check your tire pressures regularly anyway.
I bought them though on my winter set-no issues so far.

My dealership's service manager indicated that they never know what to expect once you put on winter wheels with no sensors. Some people never see any light or warning all winter. Some get the buzzer and light only on a long trip. Some see the light full-time all winter and ignore it. Some are driven to distraction by the buzzer every time they start driving. He said they (they dealership) can disable the sensor warnings for the winter on request. I have only had my winters on for a few days - my light has been on steady, but no buzzer. The warning light is small, same colour and intensity as the gauges and tucked in the left side of the panel - very easy to ignore.

and i thought $75 +shipping from performancenissan was expensive! eh, i think i might pass on the sensors. i wonder how much it costs to have them calibrated at the dealer. anyway, i'm still not sure what i might do. i have a week or so to think about it. hopefully not a lot of snow will fall then.

tire pressure sensors

Thanks for all the imput on my situation. I bought the car at Circle Infiniti in West Long Branch NJ, and I will say my dealer was great to deal with. I can't really say that about their service dept. . I even bought a set of center caps for the wheels that I'm putting the snows on from them for $25 per cap (and they're plastic). They don't cut their own customers any slack.
The sensors that they quoted that $125. price for, were offered to at that great discount dealer Grubb Infiniti, for $122.61 ea.. Wow, what a savings.
I think I'll just take my chances without the sensors. From what you guys have been saying, I'll probably have to live with the light on (I can live with that) and at worst will have to listen to a ten second warning chime each time I start the car, oh well. I can think of better things to spend that $500. on. Again, thanks for the help.

I don't think it would be very difficult from digital logic design perspective to check if "all four sensors have no comm? then disable sensor management" automatically.

I have winters and the TPS never goes off...

Don't forget to put a coversheet on it, didn't you get the memo?

"And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire..."

When I put my snows on last year, I would drive the car for about 60 or so miles and the light would come on. I'd turn the car of and then on again, no light. I'd say live with it for the winter. I think it's an interesting option on the car, but I don't really pay much attention to it. Live with the light...I mean you already have the VSC light on, don't you...

you don't have to worry about the tire pressure system w/ snow tires -- there's more than enough meat on those to see when they are low or not.

A good tire gauge would be even better. At $200+ each you don't want to just eyeball them.
