It's in your head...

if wheels/tires made a "big difference" in terms of power, everyone would be throwing on new sets of wheels and then getting the car dynoed to see what increases were realized.

Winter tires will have poorer traction that your summer tires. If traction control is engaged, it will prevent quick acceleration; if it is disengaged, your wheels spin will increase your trap speed. Therefore, Winter tires will impact your acceleration; and this goes for 18" as well as 17" setup.

What kind of rims are you using? If the rims themselves are heavy, that will definitely slow you down.

Just to add to this. (2005 G35 coupe 6mt) I didn’t notice anything significant with acceleration etc., handling is of course degraded.

What I did notice is that removing my 2005 19” stock forged rims/tires from the car; I could easily remove them because they were so light. Then popping on my 17” 2005 350z winter rims/tires, the 17” were heavier.

by principle, smaller (usually lighter) wheels make acceleration easier on the car.

My car definatelly feels slower on winter wheels if I try to accelerate very hard... reason: the ws50 blizzacks cant handle the power. Otherwise its the same with boat handling.

on dunlop wintersport m3s i feel a difference in performance, i just lose too much traction. personally i cant wait for winter to go so i can get some goodyear eagle f1 gsd3s on my car. thatll help. i just am choosing not to let on the gas or race because i want to conserve the winter tires.
