Zero weight synth oil
Zero weight synth oil
Anyone contemplating using, or have used zero weight? Apparently, it's pretty fashionable in 'Vette circles and was wondering if we could derive any benefit from it and what the risks may be....
Drive it like I stole it?
Hell...drive it like I'm making payments on it...

Re: Zero weight synth oil
There appear to be some cars/mfrs. that actually recommend 0w-whatever. But ours doesn't. For that reason, I wouldn't use it. The overall quality of some engine design and manufacture has improved in the last few years (which means design tolerances are a little closer to what is actually produced). I tend to think however that much of this oil weight issue has to do with startup emissions, startup lubrication and improving (very marginally) mpg ratings. Just my thoughts; am very willing to hear input from others.

Re: Zero weight synth oil
have you ever watched 5w-30 mobil1 pour out? its like water. I cant imagine going 0W. I think the flow characteristics of syn vs. dino already provides all the benefits needed without going below recommended weights. I think oil analysis on the VQ backs this up (see oil forum on maxima.org)
I think new vettes are having ring problems, they may be trying to address a specific problem (like their oil consumption) with 0W.

I think you have your oil weight numbers confused. Go here for my explanation on oil weights here:

No, there was only 1 year and model of new vettes that had ring problems: the 2001 Z06. They identified the problem with the ring design, and changed it in 2002, which solved the problem. The 2001 LS6 could suffer blow-by at certain engine RPM's and when the rings were installed in a certain way at the factory. Because of this, its seems to effect about 30% of 2001 Z06's. These cars having been getting new rings installed under warranty, which has had a very high success rate of fixing the oil consumption issue.
Had nothing to do with oil weight.

me? contrare' I was 5W is already thin enough at startup and flows much better than 5W dino. The analysis I've seen shows little diff between 0w-5w-10w-30 syns in regard to startup protection. Unless youre crossing the south pole, I wouldnt mess with 0w.

from reading the z06 boards, I saw alot of people having that problem.. seems like they can fix it, but most people were upset that there was a fix but the dealer still made the document the consumption for like 6 months before fixing it. Sounds like a mess.
heh, thats true about the 0w weight for them, that would burn more at startup : /

Re: Zero weight synth oil
Points all well taken and under advisement...and yes, M1 5W30 does pour a lil on the lean side...
I'll research it some more and may try it. If'n I do, I'll post my observations.
