Drive by wire is where the throttle body is electrically controlled instead of by a physical connection. On older cars, the throttle body was connected to the pedel physically by a cable. You push down on the pedal, it pulls the wire, and the wire pulls the throttle body opening it up.

Drive by wire now measures the position of the pedal, and electrically sends that information to the motor controlling the throttle body. This lets the computer have a bit more control over the amount of throttle being applied for smoother take offs, traction control, etc.

So its good for saftey and control, but it gives the driver less control over the car, but of course it's only noticable during spirited driving or racing.

* sorry * posted at same time.

Drive-by-wire indicates that the throttle-pedal position is transmitted, electronically, to the throttle-body, rather than having the two physically connected with the traditional throttle cable.

I notice sometimes where the throttle doesn't react as I would expect. Sometimes it feels delayed.

This is the first car I've owned with DriveByWire and I'm sure this is what it is related to.

I feel the delay also except when the VDC is off, there is no delay; the VDC is much more intrusive on our 6MT's than the 5AT's.

Ah. I've only turned VDC off for a brief time once or twice.

The delay bothered me at first because I didn't have any idea what it was and thought I was having an issue with the car but realized it was DBW and is normal.

thanks.
