Pontiac Firebird Kill

Well this is yet another kill story.

Once upon a time on a sultry Friday night….actually it was f’n hot Friday night in SoCal, I was heading over to my GFs place in Manhattan Beach. Came off the 405 and headed my way down Rosecrans Blvd. There were some very formidable cars on that road Friday night - Vettes, couple of AMGs, etc. Anywho there was this silver Firebird coming up on my right, a little fast for the amount of traffic, but to each there own. I had the windows down listening to my own sweet exhaust music, so I could hear the Firebird in all the V8 muscle coming down the road. A few traffic lights go by and he rockets in front of me to get in my lane. He starts to gun it towards the PCH intersection, but the light is already yellow, so he stops. So I sit behind him waiting for the light. Light turns green he takes off (not a racing start but enough for me to follow and get ahead of traffic). So I change to lanes to his right and give it a little. Oh yes….someone please remind me if that was the International sign for "lets get our race on"??

So as I level with him, just after the intersection, he floors it. His auto was changing through the gears and he was keeping up…until I hit forth. That’s when the magic started. The G just sprang to life, living in the 4500+ RPM range. When I looked back he was about 10 car lengths behind and I was doing 120 MPH.

I just let the car slow, and watched my radar detector for blips while waiting for him to catch up. I wanted to give him a “thumbs up” for the adrenalin rush. He never caught up or didn’t want to. Oh well. So I continued on my merry way, relishing in my glee.

Needless to say, when I mentioned it to my girlfriend, she rolled her eyes and gave me the "you boys and your toys" look.

I enjoyed it.

Mike.

Nice.... That's funny because I live here in SoCal too in Belmont Shore and always seem to have camaro's, mustangs and firebirds wantin to play. I still love the sound of those V8' too.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Kill

pontiac firebird is a v6, they have a formula that has a v8 but it would say on the back and trans ams are all v8s but for the most part firebirds are v6s.

Really, it sounded like a V8 (really throaty). I might have been mistaken.

I doubt you were.
For one thing, there is NO mistaking the growl of a V8 for the buzz of a GM V6 - it sounds like a boat motor (whereas the G almost sounds like an F1). Secondly, a FireChicken with a V6 couldn't hold with the G in ANY gear - you would have toasted it in nanoseconds.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Kill

It was probably a Firebird Formula. I don't think it was a trans Am. If it was a Formula, then 280HP vs 310HP is a formidible race.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Kill

What year was this car? If it was '98 or newer (they have the bubly looking front end) then the formula model looks identical to the v6 model except for a side tag you can barely see painted to match the body. Dual exhaust won't tell you much as the v6 could be ordered with that and the stock exhaust is reletively quiet.
I actually own a '00 formula and at the time I liked it's "sleeper" appeal...but they are very rare because subtilty is not a high priority for most firebird drivers.
But I doubt a g could defeat a late model formula...don't get me wrong, I love the g and ordered one for myself, but being faster than my formula was the one thing it could not do. I've only done basic intake/exhaust mods and I'm looking well over 325+ hp with even an even higher # for torque...even stock torque is 310 and hp is 305. Keep in mind that this is the same engine used on the 97+ base corvette, slightly detuned as to give the vette an advantage.
ps-late model trans am and formulas are identicle except the trans am has more plastic bolted to it's exterior...
