How do they work

I would think an overlay is something that goes on top, yet these look like they are under the clear plastic. Is it a plastic cover that goes over the whole headlight housing?

I have my black 06 coming in another couple of months. I want to know how these overlays hold up to road debris such as rocks, road kill etc. Do they get beat up pretty quick. Thanks...
