Is the Coupe a Plastic Bag Magnet?
Is the Coupe a Plastic Bag Magnet?
Ran over two plastic bags at separate times on the highway over the last few months, and both times I've smelled the hot plastic odor coming from somewhere under the car after I park it in the garage. The bags must be getting sucked up into the engine compartment, or somewhere around the exhaust system but I can't seem to find where they are going. The smell goes away after a few days, so I'm thinking that the plastic eventually melts off. I'm concerned that the bags may ignite and cause a fire under the car, or if I park over something flammable (e.g., dry grass) the hot plastic may drop onto it and cause it to ignite. Is this happening to anybody else?
Re: Is the Coupe a Plastic Bag Magnet?
A long time ago my brother had an old '69 (i think) Ford Bronco. It was uncut and a a beauty with the 302 in it. It was almost entirely stock and was not meant to go 65 down the freeway all day. He ran over a platic bag that popped up and stuck to the front grill. It blocked air over the radiator and it left it on the side of the road with a busted radiator hose...
Ever since then I avoid plastic bags as if they were girls with HIV (or girls looking to settle down, AKA landmines). I have hit one (plastic bag that is) on the freeway but luckily it popped back out the back onto the car behind me. I can't say I've ever had one stick to the exhaust and smell bad.

I had an uncle with a BMW that got a plastic bag caught on the exhaust. He had to get the thing taken off and I think it ended up costing him. to this day I try to avoid bags and if I cant I check to see if it comes out the back/

discreet may be on to something here...just drive faster on the freeways and they will move out of your way. Theories of low Reynold's number (incompressible) aerodynamics state that the air in front of you actually "knows" you are coming and is effected by your disruption of the flow field before you arrive. this explains how most bugs get stuck on your windshield. I read an interesting paper hypothesizing that cars actually kill the "stupid" bug population. the theory is that as you move through the air, the air immediately in front of you (some cases more than a meter or two) is displaced upward before you even arrive. Bugs sense this as a relative velocity change and correct for it by flying downward. They meet their end when they hit a windshield. So the author believed that he was doing a Darwinian service by killing bugs not smart enough to move.
I know I got a little off topic, but I just woke up.
Moral of the story- drive your G faster!

my g35coupe has a lot of static for some reason. when I walk by it in the garage, it seems to want to pull me, I can hear the crackling noise.

Here's one for you! Yesterday afternoon I was flying down the toll road here in Orange County and spotted something lying directly ahead in my lane that looked like a yellow plastic bag. I had vehicles on either side so I had to make a quick decision and since the material looked soft, small and flat I figured I could clear it between the wheels and roll on.
I went over it at about 80, and heard a "pop" like someone snapping a towl, and when I looked in the rear view mirror I see a small, portable back-packing type tent, thats right a tent, open completely up and stand up on the road just for a second and then it tumbled off to the side and collapsed.
It couldn't have been more that 3 inches high when I went over it. Man, our Coupes are low. I stopped at the exit and inspected the underside of the coupe, diffusers and exhaust and no problems.
