shouldnt disrespect the rx8 too much. it might he super slow and gets beat off the line by grocery getters. it does have very comfortbale seats and a much softer ride than our car. of course it also have way more body roll due to the softer suspension. Yet it has much more head room in the back.
its a dog in performance, but its actually a very good and comfortable car to take a long trip on.

First of the G is a sports car... u want a notchy tranny... gives you a lot of feedback and allows you to know when your in gear (when racing)
Second off our car is a sub 40k car... which could eaisly be sold in the 45k or more range... so stop bitchin and drive the car.. I have no problems power shifting or missing gears in this car at all.. and im confident that im not gonna break anything.
Third off quit bitchin bout it.. if your gonna putt along and worry bout yoru 2500 RPM smooth shifts go by a FWD car.. or get an AUTO.. if you drive these cars like a sports car you will love the tranny...
Ohh dont compare to the M5.. when your paying 80k plus for a car, your gonna get the best of both worlds.

My clutch has been slipping and performance has deteriorated considerably (my '04 G35 coupe has 25,000 miles, and I got it used with about 11,000 on it). I can also smell burning clutch on occasion.
I took it to the dealership here in Chicago and they told me that I need a new clutch plate and (perhaps) a new flywheel. Not cheap by any stretch, but they said that they could save me some bucks if they install a Nismo flywheel rather than an Inifiniti part...while the acceleration won't be as luxuriously smooth, it will grip quicker (i.e. more sports-oriented performance).
Any thoughts from the forum? A friend suggested that I might save money by taking the car to an independant repair shop (Infiniti says that it's not covered under the warranty). Would anyone know of a reliable place in the Chicago area?

My 2002 acura RSX transmission was grinding like hell, search the web and you will notice that MANY rsx user have tranny problems. Random grinding on second gear and third gear "pop" out.

my first reaction to driving the G was that it felt like my old 76 celica. A nice direct feeling transmission that tells me how far I push the gear sets over another. But a bit on the heavy side an old V6 forerunner I hop into once in a while.
It unfair to compare this car to an S2000 or RX-8. Just compare the low end torque of these different makes and you will understand what the engineers at nissan had to deal with. Their shifter linkages are more flexible so you don't feel anything. It's the low end torque that the transmission designers dread. This tranny is for real sports car enthusiasts not some sissy street road warrior. Try a Mustang, corvette or Viper then you will see the other extreme.
As far as those who have problems with smooth power up on shift. It's your feet not the shifter that is causing the roughness.

i haven't gotten a chance to drive a G35 MT yet but it sounds like they have some probs. i'm used to crappy trannies with poo-poo feel, but i need something that can take serious punishment and loads of power. i've already gone through one full gearbox and rear diff and entire clutch/flywheel assembly. do not want to do that again. so what's the prob with your 6mt's? doesn't feel like silk? so what makes the MT better than AT??? i'm very interested.
btw, the whole power to feel to cost comparison doesn't really apply. drive a vette.

That sounds like a description for a minivan. Except most minivans would get much better gas milage and be more reliable than the RX-8.Originally Posted by terryw

Hate to break this to you, but the G35 coupe isn't a sports car. Sporty car- yes. Sports car - not so qualified.

The G35 is just too heavy, too sloppy, too vague, too much extra junk not needed, not enough performance, and just in general, too much of a tourer to be classified a "sports car".
Having said that, take the G35 for what it is: a prodigious all-rounder, or profoundly mediocre (is your cup half full or half empty?). It is pretty good at handling, accelerating, quality built, "luxurious", well designed aesthetically, priced competitively, and just good at everything, but it will never stir your inner driving beast like an Elise or Vette or even an S2000.
I still love the G35; I just happen to love it for what it was made for, which is to look pretty delicious and have performance similar enough to a 350Z to give it some performance credit.
